Since two of our fairy tales feature talking animals I am going to post this in our group read folder.
The Speech of Animals
From Teri Windling's Blog Myth and Moor: http://windling.typepad.com/blog/
"Many an old story begins with the words, "Long ago, when animals could speak...," invoking a time when the boundary lines between the human and the animal worlds were less clearly drawn than they are today, and more easily crossed. Animals play a vibrant role in the earliest stories from around the globe: tales of animal gods and guardians, animal nurses and paramours, animal thieves and tricksters, animal teachers and ancestors"

Lovely! I added Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology to my TBR list.

A few years ago, I gave my teenage nephew The Complete Grimm Fairy Tales. Interestingly, the tales that bothered him the most, as in the ones that seemed the most ridiculous, were the ones with talking animals. He wasn't bothered by witches or the gore or mothers that are trees--but the talking animals went too far for him. Yet, if anything, I feel like animals talk to us all the time! Just in their own way, which is why I loved this article so much.

Yes, it's really a lovely article isnt it!
I have always loved the idea of talking animals. As an adult I preferred the idea of being able to understand animal languages.

Her latest blog post is about birds!
I'll post the link here even though it's not really about talking animals!

She's a wonderful essayist. I've started following her on Twitter and here so can keep track of her blog posts. It would be wonderful if she published some of her essays.
