I went to Edward Gorey's house in Cape Cod and picked up some collections. This is the first one chronologically. I remembers The Ghastly Crumb Tinies very fondly as a child (I guess I was a little on the dark side as a kid), and was eager to dive a little deeper. And wow, very interesting. Certainly not your standard children's stories (unless you like German fairy tales), although Mr. Gorey himself probably would have said he didn't write for children. I can't think of a single story I have read by him where the main character ends up better than it started. Has a very gothic feel, and sometimes the tragedies are ludicrous which is where it gets any sort of levity.
