jimena (lycaona) | 2 comments I read this book in my school library back in 2007 or so because I think my teacher recommended it.

It was about a Russian girl who talked about her childhood in Russia (probably around the beggining of the 20th century or so?) The only scene I can recall about the book is this one where she decides her hair is too long and she starts cutting it just a little, but one side is shorter thann the other, and by fixing it again and again she ends up with very short hair and her mother almost has a heart attack because apparently at that time in Russia it wasn't usual for little girls to wear short hair

Rainbowheart | 28895 comments Was it definitely set before World War II?

The only memoirs I'm finding are about the war.

The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig? I also read that around that time in school. Family exiled to Siberia in WW2. She cuts her hair because the girl at school was jealous of her.

Google Books has a snippet preview of The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia by Esther Hautzig - Unitcircle's suggestion. You might get lucky searching for keywords.

https://books.google.com/books?id=ugH... There are different cover images.

Quotes from the book:
- I kept the secret but I began my campaign to have my braids cut off. The direct approach didn't work.
"Please cut my braids off," I asked Mother.
Mother responded with a firm "No!"
- "I'll cut it myself," I threatened, unusually rebellious for me. "And it will be a great mess--" I burst into tears, tears of confusion and frustation...
