I have read several books by the author and some I have enjoyed more than others and some I actually disliked. I am fine with historical fiction as a fun lighthearted read about a topic someone might otherwise not read about. And if it sparks someone's interest in the Tudors and causes them to find out the factual information then the book has served a great purpose. In fact it was work of historical fiction that did just that for me. I also love reading a work of fiction so that I can read a "what if possibility" that the author has created to fill in the blanks of what we do not know. What I dislike about Gregory's work is how she often veers too far off of the facts that we do know. I also feel Gregory can sometimes be repetitive to fill the pages. I am glad you are enjoying a topic that is fascinating.

Honestly, if I would have read it first I would have been completely turned off from reading any type of historical book because of how difficult it is to read. Goes to show that even authors some would consider 'their most popular' (I would not say favorite as that is a bit of an exaggeration for her I think) it doesn't mean that they will like all of their pieces. I am hopefully that the other 4 books I have purchased from her are a more like the first ones I have read instead of this one.
I owe a lot to Philippa Gregory for introducing me to the Tudor historical fiction genre which has since provided me with many years of reading joy from her books an many others. I don't like all of her books and I disagree with some of her theories, but she sparked an interest for me that hasn't gone out yet and don't think ever will!
I had the super pleasure of meeting Philippa Gregory recently at a talk she did in the National Gallery for her new non-fiction novel Normal Women: Nine Hundred Years of Making History and she was DELIGHTFUL and lovely.
