I personally LOVE the darkling, but have frieds that say he is "abusive" and "manipulative" bu i bileve he should have been the choise.

I LOVE Ben Barnes but HATE the darkling and do believe he was toxic and abusive.

Short answer, I think he was. He tried to control Alina. He just wanted to use her to gain more power.

He was manipulative. The guy had depth, and he wasn't completely bad. His motives made sense and I sympathized with him on that. But him and Alina? No thank you. He was power-hungry and manipulative. There were good parts of him, but he and Alina were not a good match.
I think he is/was abusive. When he doesn't get what he wants one time, he kills everybody. Although, I think that before he was The Darkling and his name was just Aleksander, I think he was a good person. Something just changed him.
