Gideon Lindsey | 7 comments Out of all the shows that Marvel Studios wanted to put out on Disney+, Loki was probably one of the most anticipated ones. Loki has always been a fan favorite character especially after his last few appearances in the past five years. But he had usually been a supporting character. But this show wanted to put Loki into a leading role. Not only would this require a change in approach to writing him, but they also had to overcome the hurdle of him dying in Avengers: Infinity War.
They manage to sidestep that by making the show all about time travel and alternate realities. They choose to use a version of Loki from 2012. But this would mean that he didn’t have any of the character development that the character received in the six years since then. The show chooses to take the route of showing him clips of his character development to fast-forward to the version of Loki that everyone likes.
Overall, the story is super great. The cast is amazing. Mobius is an instant fan favorite and Sylvie (this show’s merge of Lady Loki and The Enchantress) is given more of a journey than Loki at times. Similarly to WandaVision, this show sets up several mysteries at the start and gives the viewer clues to their answers. Unfortunately, this show drops the ball pretty hard when it comes to paying off those mysteries.
The twist at the end is that everything was being orchestrated by this show’s adaptation of Kang the Conqueror. He then spends most of the episode giving an exposition lore dump and then it’s done. This doesn’t pay off any of the clues that the viewer got in any satisfying way. It was a very unnatural way for the story to go. And even as a finale, it was pretty boring. No big fight where all of the elements that we had seen previously all come together. Just some talking and lore reveals. Hopefully, the second season can end in a way that will let this show rise higher than a 3 out of 4 stars.
