Where did they grow up? Do they still live there?
What education do they have? What subjects did they study?
How was their childhood? Were they neglected, sheltered, raised well?
Were they involved in any extracurriculars as a child? (sports, dance, clubs, etc.)
What are some of their happiest, saddest, and earliest memories?
What were they like as a child?
The man with a black and white uniform stood by my side as I tearfully waves my family goodbye. On the side of the road was shiny car, waiting.
It didn’t take long to drive from our old cottage to the grand mansion of the Duncan family. The Duncan family have been Barons for centuries, ruling this part of the lands. All the citizens have to pay 100 gold to keep a government that they don’t need running. Since Mom and Dad couldn’t pay up, I, as the oldest, would have to go work for them.
I stepped out of the car, looking around in awe. The mansion looked bigger than the glances I took far away. The chauffeur led me inside into the entrance of Duncan Place. I couldn’t help but gasp. On the two sides of the front, identical stairs wrapped the wall, leading to the next floor upstairs. A large chandelier hung over the entrance, illuminating the path from the doors to the throne room behind the stairs.
Another man in similar uniform came out from the shadows, approaching me. “Your uniform and your belongings will be delivered to your quarters. Ana here will take you on a tour around the house.” The man must be the butler. He gestured to a young girl about my age.
As she led me away, she whispered to me. “Life isn’t easy here, you have to earn your stay. But Lord Duncan is fair and we will take good care of you.” I have a feeling that she went through a lot to say that. She managed a weak smile as I studied her uniform.
A green, tattered overall with a white shirt inside and a pair of gardener gloves. It was covered in dirt, so I guessed that she was a gardener like me.
She showed me around the mansion, opening doors to the libraries, courts, and offices. All the quarters, including mine, are located in the East Wing. My room was at the end of the corridors, she pushed open the door. In the middle of the tidy room was a small bed, next to it was a wardrobe and a dresser. The whole room was painted white. Neat and small, my style. On the bed was a uniform like hers, but new.
Ana left the room for me to change, which I did. The uniform was a little too big, I presumed the one I was wearing was probably the smallest they have already.
Ana led me around the corridors of the mansion, left, right, straight, sharp turn. It was like the hallways of Duncan Place was meant to make people get lost.
As we turned a sharp right, a woman about 50 years old, with silk and jewelry that commoners can’t afford, entered our sight. She wore a green dress of silk, her raven hair cascading down to her waist. She was a beauty, only wore down with wrinkles and a blank look.
Before I could get a better look, Ana pulled me behind a pillar, motioning for me to keep quiet. The woman must have not seen us as she glided right before us and turned into another corridor.
“The Lady doesn’t like people. She gets emotional easily and some say that she is possessed.” With a confused nod, I continued down the windy corridors until we reached a door.
It took a moment to adjust from the dark gloomy house to the bright, almost blinding sunlight. At least I will be working here, I thought as I observed my surroundings. The garden was an astonishing sight. In the center of the huge garden was a maze with neatly trimmed hedges. All around the garden were beautiful statues made with plants. Rare plants and flowers were spotted in specially structured places. It was beautifully manicured.
It didn’t take long for me to be introduced to the different sections of the garden, my role and the tools. After that, they left me to explore the garden by myself.
I walked aimlessly, walking among the flowers and plants, taking deep breaths in. My eyes landed on a light blue flower, with green leaves and light blue petals. I couldn’t help but stop to admire the gorgeously dreamy flower. I had to crouch down and smell the flower, savouring the sweet honey scent. I dropped into a trance, my mind a foggy mess.
