Foxes of Time, Book 1: The Unknown
Chapter 1
Redfur bounded around camp. He was finally free to play with his friends. “Ash!” He called his striped gray friend over, white tail tip wagging.
“What?” Ash called back.
“Let's go play around camp!”
Ash padded over.
Redfur looked around. The big pine trees and bramble bushes made the wall of the camp. A stone outcropping was near the entrance. This was where they all shared prey from the hunting parties. There was a big cave in the back wall, where the leader, Flame, slept. Flame was a big red female fox whose voice was filled with authority.
Redfur turned around, looking at his friend. Ash’s long gray fur ruffled from the wind. His white muzzle turned up as he looked at an oncoming storm.
“Look at that,” he said. “It looks bad.”
Redfur heard a distant rumble of thunder.
He looked up. The black puffy clouds loomed overhead. There was a flash and then another rumble of thunder.
The winds picked up.
Suddenly, there was a rustle in the bramble entrance. The latest hunting party had returned.
Redfur rushed over, his dark orange fur blowing around. “The snow is coming,” a fox named Snowfur growled. Redfur shuddered, The snow always brought the least amount of prey and the worst storms.
Just then came the loudest rumble of all.
The storm was here.
Chapter 2
Lightning flashed all around camp. Redfur was huddled in the main den, whimpering. It was his first storm ever. “Ash,” he whispered, “come here please.”
“Ok,” Ash whispered back. Ash had experienced a storm before, so he was not very afraid. “What if lightning strikes here?” Redfur asked, worried.
“It won’t, it would strike a tree first,” Ash soothed Redfur.
Finally, the storm ended. Redfur sighed in relief. He stumbled outside. Suddenly, there was a roar and a squeal. He whipped around. A Mountain Lion had cornered Cloud, a new kit. Redfur leapt at the big cat, only thinking that if he could save Cloud, he would be a hero. Then, he felt the wind knocked out of him. It felt as if red hot nails dug into his side. He screamed in agony. Then, everything went black.
Redfur woke up in a den that he did not recognize, He tried to get up but failed. “You're going to be fine, just lay still.” a soft female voice whispered beside Redfur’s ear. Then, all Redfur’s senses started coming back. He could smell blood, he could feel a soft pelt, he could see the fox beside him, and he could taste more blood. He looked at the gray fur of the other fox.
“Ash,” he croaked.
“I’m not Ash, I’m Leaf,” whispered the soft voice again.
Oh! Our herb fox! Redfur remembered the mention of Leaf in the nursery. The rumor was that she could cure anyone and anything. Redfur looked down at his side, where he felt the intense pain. What he saw shocked him. Long red marks down his side, big claw marks on his rear legs, and blood trickling down his side.
“Where’s Cloud?” He only just managed to squeeze out the question.
Leaf’s eyes clouded. “Dead,” she whispered.
Redfur shook with horror. “No! He was so young!”
Suddenly, There was a rustling in the entrance to the den, and a female fox, Spotclaw, entered.
“Where’s Cloud?” she asked immediately.
Leaf looked over at her. “Oh Spotclaw, he didn’t…” Leaf shook herself. “I’m so sorry! He didn’t make it—”
Chapter 3
Redfur looked around tentatively. He padded over to Ash.
“Hey Ash,” he said.
Ash whipped around. “You're better!!”
“Yep!” Redfur said, smiling. His smile weakened. “But Cloud isn’t…”
“I heard,” Ash said sadly.
They both looked around in complete silence.
Redfur paused, “Well, I’m going to go hunting. Bye!”
“Wait!!” Ash called but Redfur zoomed out anyway.
He needed some time to clear his head.
As Redfur ascended the steep slope just outside his camp, he heard rustling in the bushes. His heart leapt into his throat. Please, please, please don’t be another big and scary Mountain Lion… He stopped dead in his tracks, sniffing the air to try and see what was in the bushes.
He was completely still when the rabbit popped out. He was startled and gave a little yelp. Seeing it was a rabbit, he quickly gave chase to try and catch it. He was running out of breath. The rabbit was only a few tail lengths away! I can do this, c’mon Redfur, He thought to himself. He quickly put a little more speed on and launched himself on top of the rabbit. He landed on it, killing it as quickly as he could. He got off of it, panting. “Yeah!” He said out loud. He did a little jump. He picked up the rabbit and tossed it in the air. My first kill by myself!! He turned around, the ground a sea of orange and yellow leaves. The dead rabbit bumped whenever it hit a clump of leaves and it got harder and harder to drag it back.
