Cover prompts! We love a cover prompt! This one is sure to invite a bit of controversy, in how you decide to define handwriting. Maybe you're going for a script font, or maybe you're looking for an irregular font that looks like someone took a sharpie to the cover. We love seeing all of your interpretations, so go wild!

Could be as part of the cover decoration:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer Voices from Chernobyl The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster by Svetlana Alexievich The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans

Or just a title font that looks like handwriting:
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio The 57 Bus A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives by Dashka Slater Stay with Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

ATY Listopia: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

What are you reading for this prompt, and do you have any recommendations?

Angie | 139 comments I have a bunch of options for this one. I'm leaning toward one of these:

The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant (You might have to blow up the image to see the handwriting.)
A Pocket Full of Rye
Go Down, Moses
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane

The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant (Fred, the Vampire Accountant, #1) by Drew Hayes A Pocket Full of Rye (Miss Marple, #6) by Agatha Christie Go Down, Moses by William Faulkner The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane (The Physick Book, #1) by Katherine Howe

Dubhease | 1249 comments I'm going to finally read White Oleander by Janet Fitch

message 5: by Sydney (last edited Nov 01, 2021 06:39PM) (new)

Sydney Paige (shpaige19) | 71 comments I'm planning on reading a book by "The Lady Janies," which is the author team comprised of Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows, and Cynthia Hand. They write fun historical(-ish) fiction, and all of the books have quirky little "handwritten" annotations on the cover. I'm leaning towards My Contrary Mary, since it follows Mary Queen of Scots.

The books also lend themselves to an interesting BIO option: to read a book that the handwriting is not part of the title.

Here are the covers that they've done:
My Lady Jane (The Lady Janies, #1) by Cynthia Hand My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2) by Cynthia Hand My Calamity Jane (The Lady Janies, #3) by Cynthia Hand My Contrary Mary (Mary, #1) by Cynthia Hand My Imaginary Mary (Mary, #2) by Cynthia Hand

message 6: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1843 comments I have really struggled with the whole "what is handwriting" thing, so I narrowed it down to a book where the title looks like someone wrote it. These are what I'm considering:

One of Us Is Next (One of Us Is Lying, #2) by Karen M. McManus Meet Me in Another Life by Catriona Silvey The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange

message 7: by Wendy (last edited Nov 03, 2021 06:45PM) (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 406 comments Apparently I'm determined to be picky about this one because scrolling through my lengthy TBR, I only found a couple that I would count as handwriting (to me, script font is still font): The Lie A Memoir of Two Marriages, Catfishing & Coming Out by William Dameron The Art of the Novel by Milan Kundera or maybe Five Little Pigs (Hercule Poirot, #25) by Agatha Christie

message 10: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 729 comments I can recommend:
The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish The Weight of Ink
This one has a written name on the cover as well as faint writing in the background. It is about a scribe. I really enjoyed it.

message 11: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1119 comments This is one of my favourite prompts, I really enjoyed looking for a book for it. I'll be reading Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott for this. The cover has a map that looks handwritten:

Rotherweird (Rotherweird, #1) by Andrew Caldecott

I love Ben Aaronovitch's Peter Grant books, and the covers are all in a similar style, with the handwriting on the maps:

Rivers of London (Rivers of London, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch Moon Over Soho (Rivers of London, #2) by Ben Aaronovitch Whispers Underground by Ben Aaronovitch Broken Homes (Rivers of London, #4) by Ben Aaronovitch Foxglove Summer (Rivers of London, #5) by Ben Aaronovitch What Abigail Did That Summer (Rivers of London, #5.3) by Ben Aaronovitch The Furthest Station (Rivers of London, #5.5) by Ben Aaronovitch The Hanging Tree (Rivers of London, #6) by Ben Aaronovitch Lies Sleeping (Rivers of London, #7) by Ben Aaronovitch

I'd also recommend:

When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, #1) by Seth Grahame-Smith My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher The Eagle Tree by Ned Hayes Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

message 13: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments I’m struggling with this one because of what others have mentioned: being picky about what handwriting is. I look at the Listopia, and the majority of it screams “this is a stylized font” and not handwriting. And that kind of font has been en vogue in publishing for the last few years so there are so many books like that.

message 14: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 1483 comments You could try looking at history books or biographies - some of those have pictures of handwritten documents or famous signatures on the front. I am now going with Elizabeth In The Garden A Story Of Love, Rivalry And Spectacular Design by Trea Martyn . Elizabeth I's signature was quite dramatic so a number of books about her display it e.g. Elizabeth & Mary Cousins, Rivals, Queens by Jane Dunn (which also has the signature of Mary Queen of Scots).

message 15: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 729 comments Here's a lesser-known non-fiction I found at my local library this year and loved it. It definitely has handwriting on the cover:
Nelson's Purse by Martyn Downer

message 16: by Janell (last edited Dec 05, 2021 06:54PM) (new)

Janell | 57 comments I'd reccomend A Midwife's Tale A Midwife's Tale The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich ... the background is taken from her diary, and it's a heckuva story.

Also any book from the edition of Agatha Christie's books that has her signature on the cover (other people have mentioned a few, but I'm pretty sure I've read several from that set).

message 17: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 756 comments I did want to be strict about the handwriting, but I'm not willing to go too far off what I already have on my TBR to find something with a picture of actual script on the cover. (Though I do want something more than just cursive font.) I'm really interested in finding crayon drawn covers, but actual author's signature is a good possibility too. I like these:
Knockout by John Jodzio Nectarine by Chad Campbell Jack by Marilynne Robinson Field Study by Chet'la Sebree O Beautiful by Jung Yun Machiavelli The Art of Teaching People What to Fear by Patrick Boucheron Beside Myself A Novel by Sasha Marianna Salzmann Thick And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom One Lark, One Horse Poems by Michael Hofmann The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa

Quite a few possibilities in these lists:

https://lithub.com/the-75-best-book-c...
https://lithub.com/the-78-best-book-c...
https://lithub.com/the-101-best-book-...

For stricter folks:
Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer Pride and Prejudice The Complete Novel, with Nineteen Letters from the Characters' Correspondence, Written and Folded by Hand by Jane Austen Little Women The Complete Novel, Featuring Letters and Ephemera from the Characters’ Correspondence, Written and Folded by Hand by Barbara Heller Crossings by Alex Landragin

Some different approaches to "handwriting":
100 Boyfriends by Brontez Purnell Noise A Flaw in Human Judgment by Daniel Kahneman Craft in the Real World Rethinking Fiction Writing and Workshopping by Matthew Salesses

Celeste (celesteryr) | 497 comments Um...
Question to all the lovely readers on this thread, I've already read this light novel last night and I think it works.
But if there are any graphic design experts out there that can, for sure, identify that the title was handwritten (albeit digitally by a cover illustrator) then I would be most grateful!

The Way To Confess by Kimpa

I'm not a graphic designer, but it looks like that is a manhwa, so I'm guessing the cover is actually digitally drawn art by the same artist who drew the book. I wouldn't think you could get much closer to actual handwriting than that (short of having a copy of an actual letter or some such on the cover).

message 23: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celesteryr) | 497 comments Thanks Amy!
You’re probably correct, I guess I just wanted to get a second opinion for reassurance.
Thanks, CELESTE.

message 24: by Madelynn (new)

The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar

LeahS | 1483 comments I read Elizabeth in the Garden A Story of Love, Rivalry and Spectacular Design by Trea Martyn by Trea Martyn, which has the signature of Elizabeth I on the cover.

I'd always thought of Elizabethan gardens as knot gardens, but the ones in this book were spectacular - and there was a lot of conspicuous consumption! It would be lovely to recreate the gardens with CGI as none are left.

The Appeal by Janice Hallett is a good and original whodunit.

message 26: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 729 comments I used this one for another prompt, but noticed it has handwriting on the cover (and it was a 5-star read for me):

Tiffany Anderson (miss5elements) | 331 comments I read The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans . I think it's the highlighted title in different colors that make it seem like it's handwritten.

I'd recommend:
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng , Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris , Memoirs of a Geisha by Michael Dean , and Beloved by Toni Morrison

Nicola | 96 comments I chose from my read pile:

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

Lovely handwritting!

message 48: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 3285 comments I read The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams (The Reading List) by Sara Nisha Adams. It was a very enjoyable book, somewhat heartwarming. The author's name is handwritten.

If anyone is interested in reading it next year, it would of course if in 'A Book About Books'. Also, if 'A book by an author with three names printed on the cover' makes it, this would fit the bill (maybe this will be renamed 'A book by an author who goes by three names'?)

I had intended to read This Magnificent Dappled Sea by David Biro (This Magnificent Dappled Sea) by David Biro (title is handwritten), but my IRL book group was reading The Reading List this month, and this was the only category it fit. I definitely intend to read This Magnificent Dappled Sea at some point. Maybe next year for 'A book with a body of water in the title'?
