Mary Roach, one of my favorite non-fiction authors, gave the book five stars, but she seems always to give five-stars to books she rates on Goodreads. Still, her rating did motivate me take a look at THIS IS THE VOICE by John Colapinto. I am very glad I did (thanks Mary!). As the other reviews of THIS IS THE VOICE make clear, there are numerous reasons to read Colapinto's latest book, but the reason I am recommending it here is that it is essential reading for all who love audiobooks. Over my 73 years, I have read many more books with my eyes than with my ears, but once I started listening to books-on-tape, I was hooked on hearing the narration. Indeed, once I started reading audiobooks, I began reading even more, reading while doing other things, and reading in more genres. I have even gone back and read many of my favorite books again using my ears instead of my eyes. After reading THIS IS THE VOICE, I not only know why audiobooks are so compelling, I know much more about the evolution, the physiology, the history, the uses, the power, and the importance of human speech. I hope you enjoy reading it too.
