Our author for November is from Portugal, Eça de Queirós Eça de Queirós .
I have read two of his books so far, The Crime of Father Amaro, which is very cynical and The Maias, an epic family novel and a great read!
I am planning to read O Primo Basílio later this month.

Which book are you planning to read?

I've started Cousin Basilio and have an inkling of what's going to happen, but maybe I'm wrong. The main female character was reading the novel, La Dame aux Camelias. She's a rich young married woman with too much time on her hands. And her husband needs to leave town on business. Her first lover is the title character- a secret from everyone!

I gave up on Cousin Basilio, who turned out to be a most unpleasant character.
The Maias was so much better!

Kathy E | 2494 comments I’m slowly making my way through The Maia’s, Rosemarie. I’m wondering what Carlos will get into next. He has a few patients (who don’t pay him), but rarely goes to his expensive laboratory.

Kathy E | 2494 comments The Maias is a long story focusing on Carlos da Maia, the grandson of patriarch Afonso de Maia. We follow Carlos from a young age up into his 30s. This story is never slow. In fact, it's lively as it follows Carlos and his friend Ega and many other characters as they live their lives in Lisbon, Portugal in the late 1800s. Lisbon seems to be a character in itself.

I read The Maias a number of years and liked it a lot. I'm glad you're enjoying it, Kathy.
