Then I will join you from Sunday, on Thursday we have festival Diwali, after that I will be free. Actually I thought the book which has theme of war / holocaust will be dense and difficult read but I very much want to read it.
The book is not about the holocaust, but about a boy making his way from a concentration camp and the people he meets. It's quite short.
Happy Diwali!
Happy Diwali!
This was a really extraordinary read. Compelling and moving. I understand why they would market this as a children's book, but I think putting a book of this caliber in any kind of pigeon hole is just ridiculous. I'm glad it's still in print and being read. It deserves a long life. Wonderful depth. I could feel how the people in his past had influenced him without their being named.
The free online copy I read is here:

I agree John, they never should have marketed it as a children's book, but a good book - to be read by all.
So true, Jazzy and John!
Here are some more books I can recommend, featuring young people in war situations:
I Am Fifteen—and I Don't Want to Die by Christine Arnothy- set in Budapest
Friedrich by Hans Peter Richter -set in Germany
I Am Rosemarie by Marietta D. Moskin-set in the Netherlands

I've just finished this and found it a very moving read. David had such a lonely life and only knew life in a concentration camp. His struggles to make sense of the world outside the camp were poignantly portrayed, as he realized how different he was.
Finished. Many parts felt contrived but overall a good read. I enjoyed him calling his God the "God of green pastures and still waters".
