4. Have you read other works on Joan of Arc? How do they compare to Twain’s? Which do you like best and why?

Fonch has recommended several works in other threads, so I am going to copy them here to find them more easily.

Thanks a lot Mari Angel 😍. Unfortunatelly i have only read the Allmand`s book about the war of the one hundred years. It is not a bad book, but it is a bit naif, although thanks to this book i know to the condotieri John Hawkwood. I have not quoted the fiction books, because the Professor recomended to me to recommend more not fiction books.

Apart from history books, I have read or am reading two other fictional books about Joan of Arc, both dramas:

La doncella de Orléans ("The maid of Orleans") by Irene Maciá, a very short drama in nine very short scenes, with just five characters, which gives a very good summary of Joan's life and deeds, although it takes a few liberties, such as making Robert de Baudricourt testify in favor of Joan during her trial in Rouan.

La doncella de Orleans ("The maid of Orleans") by Friedrich Schiller, a full-length drama written in 1801. Schiller takes many liberties with the historic data, with several important mistakes, such as replacing Joan's brothers by two sisters, or making Agnès Sorel an important character. But in real life, when Agnès became a paramour of king Charles VII of France, Joan had been dead for 12 years, and when Joan met the Dauphin in Chinon, Agnès was just seven years old. Schiller also replaces the three angels and saints that Joan said had spoken to her (her Voices) by the Virgin Mary.

I am currently reading this drama by Schiller, and am about to begin the second act.

I also read both books, both of them are really goods. The book of Irene Maciá it is about the rehabilitation process of Saint Joan Arc. Irene Maciá wrote a biography of her childhood telling her beliefs, also as she suffered bullying for she has Asperger syndrome the fictional character Sheldon of Big Bang Century suffers this illness. She wrote her story because in Argentinian school there were children with Asperger syndrome, who suffered discrimination and mistreatment. Personally i i have have affection for rene. She has very good with me she assissted me in Linked In to look for a job, and she congratulated for my birthday (the Professor also did it). Besides of the books quoted by the Professor Alfonseca i have read the first part of the Henry VI written by William Shakespeare. He was very hostile with Saint Joan of Arc for Shakespeare Joan of Arc is fraud and a witch. He is english, and i also read Saint Joan of Arc by Goeger Bernard Shaw his foreword is interesting but unfortunate because he compared all famous books written about Joan of Arc. At the beggining is really good but after he committed a lot of mistakes. 1º Shaw denied the english respansability in the murder of Joan of Arc, 2º The court who judged her case was right and did it very good to condemn and 3º For George Bernard Shaw Joan of Arc is a heretic as Wycliffe, Hus and forerunner of Martin Luther. The play disliked me a lot. The George Bernard Shaw`s play was adapted by the director Otto Premmiger, and it was played by Jean Seberg, with a screeplay of our friend Graham Greene.

You are mistaken, Fonch, the book by Irene Maciá does not deal with the rehabilitation process, but with Joan's life, and its last scene deals with the 1231 inquisitorial trial and ends before Joan's death sentence.

I would swear that it was the rehabilitation process *thinking*. They appeared some friends of Joan of Arc declaring something that it did not happen in Rouen. But i might be wrong.

The dramatic information at the beginning of the last scene says the following:
(The inquisitorial trial against Joan in Rouan in 1431...)

Yes, Robert de Baudricourt (a friend of Joan) testifies in her favor in this scene, but this is a liberty Irene has taken, for in fact there were no friends of Joan in her trial.

Then i apologize for the mistake. But i promise that i read the book.

I was reading something called The Saintly Outlaw with my kids when I started Twain's book. I hadn't looked ahead so I didn't realize until we moved on to book 2 a few days ago that the next one, The Warrior Maiden, focuses on Joan of Arc. So now I'm reading two very different Joan of Arc novels at the same time. Unfortunately, I'm making slow progress in both.

I read this book Juana de Arco in 5th grade from my school's library, as well as the books on Bernadette and Genevieve of Brabant from the same collection.

It is curious in Spain this novel was published by the Publishing Palabra.
