Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments Help/Discussion: Site 4, Narcisse Snake Den Sculpture, Inwood, Manitoba, Canada

1. Location: Inwood, Manitoba is neas the Narcisse Snake Dens where In the spring, more than 100,000 snakes come out of their communal winter dens for a mating frenzy before the normally anti-social creatures slither away to summer feeding grounds.
Read a book with a snake(s) are on the cover.

2. About: These two snakes are named Sara and Sam, and are garter snakes.
Read a book with one of the following garter snake types in the title: Garter, Aquatic, Butler, Highland, Giant, Plains, Ribbon.

3. Souvenir: Snakeskin Boots. Snakeskin is used to make clothing such as vests, belts, boots or shoes or fashion accessories such as handbags and wallets.
Read a book with at least one pair of boots on the cover.

Camilla | 2119 comments For task 3, read a book with at least one pair of boots on the cover, what kind of boots do I start looking for? Hiking boots, riding boots, cowboy boots, rubber boots?

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments As long as they are boots, there is no specification as to what type they are.

LoriLovesBooks | 248 comments For anyone in the UK who reads Kindle books this one is in the December monthly deals:

The Diary by Vikki Patis

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments I don't know if The Diary is available as a monthly deal through Amazon.ca, but it shows as $3.99 - a doable price. :)

Suzanne | 1264 comments Today's kindle daily deal in the US has this book with boots on the cover for $2.99 - The Girls with No Names

The Girls with No Names by Serena Burdick

Odette (odman) | 997 comments I am finding it difficult to find a suitable book with boots on cover.

I think they are lace up shoes and not boots on the cover of The Time Traveller's Wife. There are two pairs of shoes one being worn and the other on a white cloth.
The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Here is a book that I enjoyed reading and is on Kindle Unlimited.
The Illegal Gardener
The Illegal Gardener by Sara Alexi

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments Time Traveller's Wife has shoes on the cover. Not boots.

message 10: by Odette (last edited Dec 14, 2021 12:51PM) (new)

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Thanks, Janice. Thought that may have been the case, as lace up walking and dress shoes are not boots. Whereas the sturdier ones for work as on the cover of the Illegal Gardener are OK?
I rather like the look of both the Diary and the Girls with No Names so may go with one of those.

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments Definition: "Shoes. Boots are footwear that covers not only the feet but also the ankles and sometimes even the lower leg. Shoes cover and protect the feet but generally stay below the ankles."

I don't think lacing is the deciding factor. Boots are generally more utilitarian, but that isn't a hard and fast rule either. If in doubt, ask for a ruling.

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Thanks, Janice that's cleared it up for me. May do some more gophering before deciding. Trying to organise books for first badge in advance.

I think I am going to use The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson for this task

You have helped me make a decision! The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek looks fascinating. My Library has a copy, which I am reserving. Thanks for posting about this book.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The one that I immediately think of is The Witch's Daughter (The Witch's Daughter, #1) by Paula Brackston

Saar The Book owl | 2677 comments I want to use as much books that I own or my library owns. I'll look this one up. Thanks, Peggy.

Camilla | 2119 comments I just read Wife in the North by Judith O'Reilly for the December monthly challenge. I've tentatively planned to use The Factory Girls of Lark Lane (Lark Lane, #1) by Pam Howes for this task. One obvious choice is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (not a pair, so won't work, sorry). I've also got e.g. Big Big Sky by Kristyn Dunnion and No Place For Us by Rachel Christensen on my TBR.

These lists have some boots on the cover

Saar The Book owl | 2677 comments Thanks, Camilla! That's a lot, but I don't think that Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed will work. It's only 1 boot and it needs to be a pair of them. I'll check out the links.

Oh, I hadn't even noticed that it needs to be a pair! Thank you for pointing it out, I'll edit my comment.

@Camilla: no problem. Now you know that too for your challenge ;)

Viji | 1541 comments 3. Souvenir:
Read a book with at least one pair of boots on the cover.

Would any of these books work for the task:

1. Boot Camp Bride a fake engagement, a bogus wedding - what could possibly go wrong? by Lizzie Lamb
2. Seriously Wicked (Seriously Wicked, #1) by Tina Connolly

Thanks.

Kristie | 19452 comments Viji, I'm not sure why you're asking for a ruling? The first book is a close up of the boots.

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments Please don't ask for rulings on obvious choices.

I was not sure about it. That's why I asked.

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Does the The Essex Serpent fit the criteria for Location.
The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

The snake is a somewhat camouflaged and perhaps stylistic, so not quite sure. It is available on Amazon for $1.99. Cheaper than my original choice and better reviews!

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60320 comments Yes, it will work.

Katrisa | 4529 comments For the About task I am listening to The Highland Witch and thought I'd recommend it for this task if anyone's looking for a book. I am not all the way done with it yet, but it is one of those books that just makes me feel like I am right there and the writing is beautiful. It is historical fiction not fantasy though several have listed it as such on the main page. I am 2/3 in and it's not "that" kind of witch - though I guess the book may take a turn at the end. So far it's herbs and women who don't conform
UPDATE - now that I have finished I can certify that it is indeed not paranormal. Also based on something that happened in real Scottish history.

I'm going to say no. You can't tell that there's a snake there. The title gives you a clue as to what is there, but without the title, I wouldn't have guessed. I ask for prominent which I think is synonymous with obvious.
