Janice (jamasc) | 60322 comments Help/Discussion: Site 24, Big Mosquito, Hexham, Australia

1. Location: Hexham, Austalia - Hexham was named after the market town of Hexham, England with both towns being near to a Newcastle and sharing a history with one another; many of the coal miners from Newcastle upon Tyne and elsewhere in Northumberland moved to New South Wales at the time of settlement.
Read a book with a character who was a miner or the book is about mining.

2. About: Mosquitoes can act as vectors for many disease-causing viruses and parasites. Infected mosquitoes carry these organisms from person to person without exhibiting symptoms themselves.
Read a book that is dystopian dealing with pandemics.

3, Souvenir: Mosquito bite. (Like we all want to take a mosquito bite home as a souvenir.)
Read a book with animal teeth that look like they could leave a nasty bite.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments For the miner task, I am hoping Work Song works out, but I read How Green Was My Valley for the museum challenge, and this book will definitely fit the miner task.
It is absolutely worth the read!

Katrisa | 4529 comments I found The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven on Chirp today and the blurb says the MC was a miner. I am glad because I thought this task was going to be one of the harder ones to find a book for.

Would Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco be acceptable for this task?

Thanks.

The snake's fangs would give you a nasty bite for sure. But the skull is human. So if you are basing your question about the snake, I would accept it.

This book would also fit the skeleton/skull task.

I only wanted to know if the snake would be acceptable and thanks for helping me. I have another book for the skeleton/skull task. I could only find this book for the 'animal teeth that look like they could leave a nasty bite' task.

Do either of these 2 books fit the criteria. The first one may be the better fit.
1. The Opal Miner's Daughter by Fiona McArthur (due to be released end of August 2022 and is available for pre-purchase on Amazon Kindle store.)
2. The Opal Desert by Di Morrissey
I would prefer to read one of these, though have another 2 which I think fit but not as eager to read.
Stone Sky Gold Mountain by Mirandi Riwoe
The Black Opal by Katharine Susannah Prichard

#1 has no book page for me to read what the story is about. If she's just the daughter of an Opal miner, then no. But if there is a significant part of the story about mining, then yes.

#2 says nothing about mining in the book blurb and on that basis, I say no.

3 & 4 would both fit.

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Thanks, Janice. I downloaded samples of 3 & 4 on kindle. The Miranadi Riwoe book is very recent and the writing looks appealing. The Black Opal is a much older book, should be interesting, though the style of writing appears dated. Now to make a decision!

If anyone is interested, I can suggest 2 other titles, that I already have read.
The Goldminer's Sister, and
Treasure & Dirt

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Does Grass by Sheri S. Tepper fit the criteris for 2. About?

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60322 comments From the book blurb and various reviews, it sounds like it's more about the planet than about a plague attacking other planets, so I'm going to say no.

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Thanks Janice - was not sure about it.
Another book I have in mind is Lock In by John Scalzi. It is set in the future on earth after a pandemic. As a result a small group of people suffer from a syndrome which locks them into their bodies.
I think this may fit better.

Janice (jamasc) | 60322 comments Yes, Lock In will work.
