Mercy sat at the desk, looking quite bored. They peered out the window and saw dusk falling. This was when the most customers came, but today was a Tuesday so things wouldn't be as active as usual. After that Mercy would set up shop and have to hunt down souls, but they really, really didn't want to. They began use their feet to kick off the rolly chair into motion, sending them spinning around the room. Not only did they have to reap souls, she also had to kill some rando in an insane asylum.

Jael walked down the steps that led from the second floor of the shop, the second floor was a simple apartment that they lived in. It was easier to set up a base in their shop along with their home, all smart planning. Jael had business to attend to with some other reaping that needed to be done else where and had decided that Mercy would take over what he couldn't finish.
"How are things going?" he teased, appearing behind her, and stopping her chair.
He had been at the base of the stairs.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy let out a loud, purposeful sigh when Jael she heard him coming down the stairs.
"It's slower than usual," they said and crossed their arms. It was better to state the truth rather than shamefully hide behind lies, Mercy found. When he stopped her chair, they almost fell out of it and had to grab the arm rests to regain balance. "What are you doing?" she asked. Likely about to tell them that they have more work to do, which was true.

"Oh don't sigh like that," he had told her, sarcastically.
He let out a half laugh when she almost fell out, he was suddenly sitting on the front counter, he had been told many times that walking around was more of a normal human thing. Jael was meant and supposed to be acting like your average feline commoner, but wasn't doing so well at it.
"Just annoying you," he admitted.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

They rolled their eyes at him.
She was always weirded out when Jael acted more human than he really was, but supposed it was necessary in order to blend in. "Jay, you really just look stupid whenever you do human things," they said, spinning to face him. It was kind of their mission to make fun of evert single thing he did. He was really annoying, after all.
"Ah, I see. Since you have no one else to annoy," she said and smirked, pointing at his chest where underneath was the symbol binding them. Often Mercy wondered why she was born just to be bound to some demon, but never really asked. They were a little afraid of what the answer might be.

message 7: by leah-megan (new)

leah-megan ( ♥meg♥ ) | 1225 comments

"I do?" "Does it make me more suspicious?" he asked her, genuinely curious.
At this point the two of them had been around each other for over hundred years, long over that actually, and now knew how to annoy each other to great lengths that it didn't even anger them fully anymore.
"Exactly," he leaned back on the counter and tapped his nose twice then pointed at her.
In fact it was kinda an interesting story of why they ended up being bound together, and if you asked Jael he wasn't fully loving being bound to another being. But had grown to not mind it, because Mercy was an interesting person.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

"Oh, yes, very suspicious. You might need to go under cover for a while just because of how devilish you appear," they said, laughing a little. Mercy knew a bit more about humans than he did, considering they watched them rather closely and participated in some of their activities such as eating snacks.
"Well, if you want me to reap souls, I'll have you know that I lost my scythe so it'll probably be another few hundred years before I find it again. Too bad, so sad. Sorry it had to end this way," she said. To be honest, Mercy wasn't really lying. They couldn't find it this morning and just assumed it was buried under the piles of clothes and trash in their room.

message 9: by leah-megan (new)

He shook his head, it was a genuine question, because he hadn't yet told her the only reason he was trying to act like a human and had the appearance of one was so he didn't get locked up for the rest of his life. Plus Mercy knew not only a bit, but a lot more about humans then Jael let on.
"Don't joke about that," he says, "Where did you lose it?" his tone was a little serious.
Well as serious at Jael got, he wasn't the type that got all up tight about many things, and was more likely to just say to bad so sad. This was different though, because it was something important.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy sighed and gave a real answer. "Not really. Unless someone was stalking you or something, I don't think it'd really be an issue. Well, you kind of do have a stalker," she said, thinking about Anastasia Batair, satanic princess of the Bat Kingdom. That girl would bleed to death for a glimpse of Jael and Mercy found it a little funny.
"Ugh, I lose it all the time. It's probably under some clothes or something," Mercy said in a casual manner, but seeing Jael even a little serious made them sit up straighter and hold eye contact. As much as they hid it from him, she didn't want to fail him. Scythes like those were hard to come be. Really hard to come by. "Jay, I wouldn't just throw it in the garbage. It's either down here or in the apartment, I promise."

message 11: by leah-megan (new)

He let out a snort, knowing all to well who she was referring to and shamefully he didn't completely mind the bat-hybrids offerings, they tasted good to say the least. Not that they swayed him from his completely loyalty to Mercy.
"Good," he says, satisfied with her answer.
He knew how hard those things were to get, and he personally would be the one responsible to get her another if they lost it, it wasn't something he wanted to waste his time doing.
Jael walked around the shop, it was a little gothic, with lots of coffins on the wall here or there and the odd skull. Most people joked that they were for decoration, but Jael and Mercy knew they were real.
"What work do we need today?" he asked, he was spinning a knife that he had on hand in his finger tips.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy grinned. They knew Jael did like the offerings, but that didn't make it any less hilarious to see some little princess pining over a demon. Mercy didn't feel jealous or anything since they knew Anastasia would never be able to compete with them and every time she thought that she gained a boost of confidence.
She noticed him looking at one of the skulls and smiled fondly, recalling how interesting that person was before they tried to murder Jael stupidly. They were snapped back to reality with the demon's voice. "It was a slow day, so only one customer came for our secret business. It was funny, she was a cute little old lady asking to murder someone. Anyways, our target is at the local insane asylum and they have to be dead by next week. Oh, and the woman asked we make it drawn out," Mercy said. "Also, where'd that knife come from? It looks cool."

message 13: by leah-megan (new)

leah-megan ( ♥meg♥ ) | 1225 comments

Jael relationship with the princess wasn't anything special, at least in his mind, but being his usual slightly self centered person, he liked having someone fawn over him. Clearly he wasn't an angel, he would be a terrible angel.
Jael remembered that person, trying to use magic to cast out the demon from him, which he found funny as he was a demon. The best part had been the human's reaction to seeing the demon in it's real appearance, not the one he stole.
"Old woman?" "Hope she didn't beat you with her handbag," he teased.
When Mercy mentioned the fact about a long and drawn out death, he smiled, already with an entire way to drive that man to insanity worse then he already was.
"A simple half shift, and giving him nightmares so he can't sleep," "The perfect draw out," he stated, he stopped spinning the knife and grinned, "Oh this?" "Made out of souls, forged in hellfire and blood," he stated.
He was proud of this knife, not that he had made it, but by how it had been made. Since the souls used had been collected by yours truly.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy laughed. "Well, she was actually really nice. She said everything so sweetly and it was as if she was talking about the weather or something. Not the type you'd expect," they said. She knew Jael would like the drawn out part since most people just wanted it to be done and over with.
"Oh, that'll be painful. I just don't really get why people get so freaked out though. I've seen acne worse than your real self," they said, rolling their eyes. It was just people being dramatic as usual, but it could be amusing when they were in the mood for it.
"Oh, I assume they don't sell that at any local store. I get by with a dagger," Mercy said, taking a black dagger from out of their jean pocket. The handle had some amethyst on it, but nothing too fancy. They'd gotten it by wrestling some old dude in Hell. "Everything you have is forged in the blood of your enemies or whatever. I only get a scythe with holes in it that traumatize humans if they look in them." Mercy was actually grateful for the things they had, but they weren't about to be that sappy in front of Jael.

"Human are strange, you can't always judge by their looks," he agrees.
It was true the drawn out ways were the best kinda, it meant he got to have more fun before killing someone, he wasn't allowed to eat the soul which was the best part but he could eat everything else or just make some evil spirit summoning circles withe blood to leave chaos.
"I'm bound to you," "That means it doesn't affect you, but mortals see something darker then darkness, drives you crazy," he chuckles.
He had never been able to see this form, since his demon appearance didn't have reflection, it was annoying because he was almost certain that this horrify body would look just as good as his fake.
He laughed, "Of course, not," "Local stores wished they could make this."
When they commented about their own weapon he was quite glad he had gotten it form them, knowing quite well that Mercy was the best person suited to handle something as powerful as it.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

"You sound like a motivational speaker," Mercy said. She'd seen some of them in action and it was embarrassing to say the least.
"Yeah, you've told me before, but I just can't imagine it. Wonder what it's like to be human. They die so easily! It'd be scary, though, to be born with such little time," Mercy stated, thinking about how it took her far longer than the average human lifespan to become even decent at reaping. The fact that those humans were able to still do anything at all was a mystery.
"Local stores sell dull blades. I don't know what the Hell they're on," Mercy said. "By the way, when's our next trip to Hell? It's the only time I ever get a break. I promise I'll remember to put the closed sign on the door if we do. Also, I think I want to beat up another old guy." They'd gotten kicked out of a club for that.

"I do my best," he acted like he was hold suspenders and grinned.
Jael was a man but acted like a child at times, it was just something he happened to do and no one could tell him otherwise, well the exepction of Mercy. But they were different then humans, so that didn't count.
"They probably don't even realize," he tells her, "Plus that means endless food."
He thought about it for a moment, his arms now crossed over his chest and a finger on his lips, he was thinking hard about this and more then he needed to.
"I was planning on speaking with some other demons tonight, and since you've lost that scythe of yours, you might as well come with me," he smiled.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy rolled their eyes. They rolled their eyes a lot, thinking everything was ironic or stupid. "You can be anything you want to be!" she said in a high pitched, motivational-esque tone.
"Food . . ," Mercy said, eyes suddenly focused and on a mission. They turned to the pile of trash and began sifting through. All the other areas of the shop were spotless, but behind the desk it looked like a hoarder's nest. They kept sifting until they grabbed something. "Yes!" they exclaimed and got a cylinder shaped can labelled 'Proongles' and below it 'sour cream and onion flavored'. When they opened the lid, however, only crumbs were left inside. "Ugh, what's the point of living anymore?" Mercy said and dramatically sighed, throwing the can somewhere behind her.
Mercy's eyes sparkled. "Really? Yes! They have an exclusive flavor of Proongles down there that makes your ears go on fire. It's horrible and I love it," they said, jumping out of their chair and twirling around. They only made extra movements when very excited. "Maybe I'll just never find that scythe again, then you'll have to always take me! I'm joking," she added, not wanting to ruin the moment.

"Of course," he laughed, he always found this tone to be so strange coming form her mouth.
Jael turned his head to watch Mercy sift through the mess behind the desk, he now stood behind her watching, this spot was always a disaster. He had no idea how they found anything right here, since he most certainly couldn't, as Jael had to constantly ask for help.
"Murder," Jael replied, nonchalantly, to their rhetorical question.
Well at least that was his point for living, that was what he was born from, someone murdering another. A glorious way to start living in his opinion. When she tossed the can, he ducked as it almost hit him in the forehead,
"Watch where you're throwing things," he tells her.
He rolled his eyes at such a trivial thing to be excited about, but he did give her warning glance at that last comment, even though he knew she was joking.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy didn't like clean rooms since that always meant things were far away on some shelf or another. It was much easier to have a pile right by you.
"True, but food. You live for murder, I live for human things. Like, you just get a reason to wake up in the morning when you try food. Wow, I'd be a good saleswoman," Mercy said, even though they'd be a terrible saleswoman. Murdering was fun, she couldn't lie about that, but it was just kind of meh after a while. That's why they did it as little as possible (which was not so little) just to savor the thrill.
"I was watching," Mercy calmly stated and smirked.
"Hey, don't make fun of me. You get to go there all the time, and I have to, like, do stupid stuff," she whined. "Dude, when I go there I'm gonna kill someone. I forgot what happens when you die in Hell. Do they die forever or something else? Sorry, I never really listened to much of what you told me."

message 21: by leah-megan (new)

"I don't get nutrients or enjoyment from human food, so it's pointless to care about it."
When they mentioned being a saleswoman he gave them a look that suggested it wasn't the best idea they had had in the last while, which was true. While Mercy could get tired of killing things, Jael never had that problem it was like a condition at this point.
"Of course you were," he sighed, tapping her head with his knuckle.
He listened to her whining this happened often that she complained about things like this and he guess he understood slightly, but not that much.
"They die forever, yes," "And maybe you should listen."

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

"You see, I don't understand the lack of enjoyment you get. It's delicious. They make it out of, like, plastic or something and it somehow tastes heavenly," Mercy said. Even the weird stuff they put in it might not be good for her, which was truly something difficult to accomplish. Jael didn't enjoy food, but he never got tired of killing. They were opposites in nearly every aspect. Mercy didn't know how they hadn't already killed each other. Oh, right, they're bound.
"I was just saying it, Jay! Becoming a saleswoman would be way too much effort," Mercy said, which was precisely why she would be terrible.
Mercy sheepishly grinned. "Well, I don't have to listen because I ended up being right. That's how you get through life, just guess your way through. Then you become a pro guesser." She began to sift through the pile yet again, this time in search for something more important. "Where did we leave the portal to Hell again? Because I don't want to kill myself like last time. I just kept bleeding for hours and it became really boring." The portal was very compact and small, but could extend out like a door.

message 23: by leah-megan (new)

leah-megan ( ♥meg♥ ) | 1225 comments

He was skeptical of what she was saying and it this food they spoke of didn't any more appealing as they spoke of it. Humans were just complicated and confusing, this was why he was often curious about them, but also why killing them was fun. Their reactions most of the time were the same, but the best ones were those you didn't expect.
"Yeah, you would slack on the job," he teased, know it was true.
He gave them a doubtful look, there probably wasn't such thing as a pro guesser, that just didn't seem like a thing humans would be capable of.
"I held onto it," he told her, and pulled the same object out of his pocket handing it to them, "I knew you would put that into," "This mess," he motioned to the pile, "So I decided to watch over it," he informed.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Mercy didn't necessarily have a strong desire to kill them, more just that it was a fun pastime. They were more reeled in to learn more about their strange culture, seeing as it was much different from that of a demon.
Mercy huffed. "Maybe it'd be my true passion and I'd actually become really good at it," she said, both of them knowing how dumb that sounded.
"I have other messes, too. Like the one upstairs, and the other ones upstairs. But I probably would've put it in that one with all the super large rubik's cubes that we got in bulk from that one time, not this one. It's too important for that," Mercy stated. By 'that one time' she meant when she took on an assassination in payment for a dozen large rubik's cubes.
"Okay, so can we go to Hell nowwww?" they asked, already intensely staring at the object. It had several sigils etched and was spherical. It didn't stand out from the many ancient relics they had lying around, but it would be terrible if they lost it.

message 25: by leah-megan (new)

leah-megan ( ♥meg♥ ) | 1225 comments

"Mmm, probably not," he shook his head, it sounded really dumb their comment.
He knew a true passion for Mercy probably wasn't that of a salesperson, they would probably lose interest very quickly, at least he assumed as much would happen. But your never know.
"Right~" "You have more of those," he mumbled, "Well they aren't in my room, so keep them in your space," he stated.
He room in fact was very empty with a bed, rug, and desk, otherwise his room was empty. Jael hadn't even tried stepping to Mercy's room, having already seen the piles everywhere else so it would be pointless to even check to see if their room would be any different.
"Why did we even get those again?" he asked.
Having forgotten the entire reason for buying so many of those anyone mortal puzzles.
"Not yet, we leave at 11," he tells her, then looks around for a clock, "It's only 5."

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

She sighed and dropped the subject, knowing that there was no winning this fight. Even she didn't believe it, which made them wonder why they were even arguing it in the first place. Mercy was just stubborn like that, often wanting to prove people wrong for the sake of proving people wrong.
Mercy, as much as they hated seeing minimalistic rooms (which weren't usually that minimalistic), from time to time would go in just to see something new. It was interesting to see how his mind worked and how he sorted things. She was a little offended that Jael never entered their room, though, seeing as they spent hours making their messes perfectly 'organized'.
"Because it was funny. And then I think you kinda annoyed that I did that or something," Mercy said, recalling the events fondly. "They're actually somewhat hard to solve until you solve them. They're pointless, though," she said. They spotted a normal sized rubik's cube on the ground a picked it up, scrambling the colors until they were mismatched again. "You try."
"11? That's so long. Why can't we just go now? I could just close the shop early, y'know, and then it'd be fine. We'd lose around 0 customers," they said. The business was doing decently, oddly enough, but Mercy never took it seriously. It took the added effort of Jael to actually keep it afloat.

message 27: by leah-megan (new)

leah-megan ( ♥meg♥ ) | 1225 comments

Jael smiled to himself, he knew that he had won something, he wasn't completely sure. But that sigh from Mercy told him that something had gone in his favor, he was pleased with himself. Mercy was stubborn and so was Jael, it was like couple that were always picking at eachother, but never broke up since the picking at each other was just to keep things interesting.
It wasn't that Jael had anything against her room, but the way they had it done was just a bit overwhelming for the slightly organized Jael. Besides he wasn't all that big into mortal things, other then fashion, he did like to dress nicely that was something he liked about mortals was their sense of style.
"It was very annoying," "And of course they are!" He stated with a huff.
When they handed him one of those horrible puzzles he glared at it for a moment, like he was cursing it with everything he had in him, as well as like it had done something terrible thing to him and offended him.
"Exactly, they are pointless," he twisted the different part and eventually gave up throwing it in a fit.
Jael chuckled, he supposed it wouldn't hurt, but the mortals would think it was strange that they always closed shop so early on random dates. But at this point he felt like going, so Mercy won,
"I guess I don't have a reason not to," he tossed the sphere to them.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

She saw his sigh and immediately grinned. "That settles it. I'm becoming a saleswoman." Yeah, Mercy really just couldn't drop it. They weren't sure if they'd follow through. That would require going to college, but they'd do it just to win that argument.
"But it was funny! Come on. You see tiny rubik's cubes, but do you ever see big ones? That guy was cool. I can't believe he wanted me to kill his mom, though," they said, a little weirded out. He even tried to explain it as if he were rationalizing it to himself. They'd just told him they don't need an explanation, but they always were curious to see the reason behind it.
"You may be superior in every other aspect, but not puzzles," Mercy said and grinned devilishly as she picked up the puzzle and solved it in a few seconds. Puzzles were something they were quite skilled at, no matter how pointless. They hoped one day their skill would prove useful if they found some ancient labyrinth that could only be solved with wit. Then Mercy'd show Jael that their talent didn't go completely to waste.
"Woo!" Mercy cried and examined the sphere, finding the button. They clicked it and jumped as the door extended outward, revealing a red glowing aura from within, blooming darker in areas like watercolor. "Oh, wait," Mercy said and ran over to the sign, flipping it over to closed. Normally they'd just forget this, but wanted to be considerate since Jael had allowed this. They screamed thank you in their head over and over, hoping it'd telepathically translate into his head. Mercy really didn't like saying those things.
She made a swooping motion with her hands beside the entrance, smiling up at him. "Gentlemen first," she said in a mockingly professional manner.

He place his hand on his face, goodness, they never gave up. Normally he wouldn't back down either but this would last forever if he didn't be the bigger person and stop it, with this thought in mind he looked at her and smirked.
"Alright, you win," he said, being the bigger person.
He shook his head in response to the question, he hadn't in fact seen the large one of this puzzle and he didn't want to, assuming they would be even worse.
"They have never been of importance to me," Jael told them.
He watched over her shoulder as they solved it like it was nothing, he staring at the now solved puzzle, and took it form their hand. Looking at all sides trying to find some mistake but there was none, he frowned.
"I'll never understand how you do this," he mumbled, slightly impressed.
Jael's attention was quickly brought back to the sphere that they would be using as the portal, he waiting for Mercy to get it all set up, watching with his arms crossed as his weight rested on his right leg. Watching her run to the door to flip the sign he nodded with approval, he couldn't hear their excited thanks, but it didn't matter to him.
"Of course," he teased, he put his hands in his pockets after retying back his hair and stepping into the portal.

Mercy made a noise of extreme annoyance. How did a joke about a saleswoman come to this? They then questioned why they were changing their life just for this and could find no real reason. "Jay, I see what you're doing. You don't really want me to become a saleswoman but you're just saying that so I don't become one but I know you too well," Mercy said, taking a shot in the dark and hoping it was correct. They'd likely continue to argue about this all the way to Hell and all the way back from it, and even possibly after that.
"Only because you suck at puzzles," Mercy said casually, hoping he'd be upset by that. "You know, a lot of geniuses are good at puzzles. So if you're really bad at them, what does that make you?" They felt proud of their skill and wanted to boast it, but not without making a jab towards him. "I mean, you just have to practice. You give up in the first try, but you have to actually think about it," she said and pointed at their own skull.
Mercy followed behind, stepping into Hell.

Adrien Lockheart Liam Quail had just decided he hated the Feline Capital. Of course the king had to send him out for a reconnaissance mission on the rainiest day of the month. It was absolutely pouring, and it felt as if every inch of Liam’s body, from his ears to tail, was soaked with water. To add to the unsavory weather, Liam had to apply a very strong perfume to mask his scent, sandalwood, as the clerk said. A week’s worth of wages down the drain to smell like some wretched flower. Lovely. He walked slightly apprehensively down the streets of the capital. A jackal had to look at least somewhat like a cat. Just to be safe, he wore a hood to mask his ears.

And that was how he appeared on the doorstep to Grim Desires. Well, this sounds interesting, Liam thought to himself, It’s either a gambling parlor, pub, or some sort of eccentric shop. Either way, he wanted in. The owners had to know something about the feline politics, especially the trade. As he walked closer, he noticed some employee flipping out the “Closed” sign. Liam groaned loudly. Could nothing be simple today? Reaching for his wallet and pulling out a hefty sum of cash, ready to bribe his way to answers, Liam almost didn’t notice the red glow coming from the windows. He reached back his hand, careful not to allude to his presence. Looking through the window, he saw a somewhat-flaming door, or perhaps some sort of portal open up in the middle of the room.

Now this was some information.

Liam made quick work of the cheap lock on the door, entered the storefront, and promptly skulked into the portal before it closed.
