CRIMSON ACADEMY OF THE SUPERNATURAL
The first known record of a human with supernatural abilities was about 100 years ago. This person was kidnapped, experimented on - and still, scientists had no idea how it happened. When other rare individuals began discovering their own abilities, they hid those powers and tried their hardest to live a normal life. But those powers instantly made them all targets. An underground organization sprang up out of nowhere, kidnapping powered individuals in the night and taking them away to labs and prisons. People would go missing and never be heard from again.
In 1945, the Crimson Academy was founded to protect these individuals. It started out as a large plane traveling all around the globe to avoid detection, but after fifteen years like that, it became impractical. Cloaking technology was developed, and the school was built on a small, unnamed island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
The Academy's purpose was originally to train these people to control their powers, in order to hide them and be able to live a normal life. Over the years, it's developed exponentially into something else - a school for future superheroes, with advanced technology and agents both powered and non-powered all over the world. No hero's true identity is known, but they're beginning to embrace their abilities and dedicate themselves to protecting the world.
Anyone who needs to hide from the Force is welcome on the island, but the Academy only teaches those between the ages of 11 and 18.

SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES AND BURNOUT
Superhuman abilities come in a variety of forms. No two people have the same ability - though some are very similar. These abilities usually show before the user turns 18, but can appear during adulthood in some extremely rare cases.
There are two types of abilities - internal and external. Internal abilities are present in the user's own body, such as super strength or shapeshifting. External abilities are abilities that manipulate other things, such as telekinesis or pyrokinesis.
Every superhuman ability has a burnout, a negative effect or consequence for overusing it. Exhaustion or fatigue is a very common burnout, but there are a variety of others. It really just depends on the ability. With enough training in your ability, you'll be able to use it longer before burnout, but that takes a long time.

THE FORCE OF ECHOES
The Academy's number one enemy, The Force of Echoes is an organization hell-bent on control. They have a wide range of influential people in their pocket - politicians, billionaires, anyone they can easily manipulate. They're the Academy's boogyman; everyone knows about them, but only a very unlucky few have ever had a brush with the Force.
The Force of Echoes uses illegal and immoral methods to get what they want. Powered and non-powered individuals are kidnapped at a young age and turned into assassins and soldiers. The strong stand in the spotlight, while the weak are left to die.
Crimson Academy is one of the few things standing in the Force's way, and the two are constantly at each other's throats.

THE TOWN
On the west side of the island sits a bustling town full of shops and homes along the coastline. This town is made up almost entirely of past Academy alumni who decided to stay there rather than be a hero, as well as anyone who needs to hide from the Force. Students from the Academy frequent the shops and restaurants during their free time - a number of the older kids have part-time jobs there - and a tall building right in the center is where all of the teacher and staff apartments are located.
Nobody's actually sure what the town is called - it's just referred to as "the town", or some people have given it a name of their own. It's brought up at least once a year at the board meetings that the town needs a name, but nobody ever actually gets to it. Either way, it's entirely secure and full of people who could defend the school in times of crisis.
