What is modern art?

Is it nonsense, or expression?

Or both?

And is it good to consume?

I say expression of nonsense. I say it's not healthy to stare at for long hours on end.

And I will quote Francis Shaeffer to all the people here who disagree with me. XD

message 2: by Book - Dragon (new)

Book - Dragon What do you mean by modern art? Like those weird statues of random shapes? Or those scribbles on paper that people call art?

message 3: by Book - Dragon (new)

Book - Dragon I'm not a very cultured person so I haven't seen a lot of modern art.

That's exactly what I mean.

message 5: by Book - Dragon (new)

Book - Dragon Modern art. Is it even really art? I don't think so. It looks like something a two year old created. I think art is something that we pour out emotions into and get something beautiful.

message 6: by Alison (new)

Alison Hehe. . . nonsense. Complete nonsense.

Okay, there are some exceptions, but otherwise, just no. Like, at this point, I could just scribble over some paper and call that amazing art which should be hung in a museum.

message 7: by Fortissimo (new)

Fortissimo (kendra_simps) I think it can be expressive, and even beautiful abstractly. I mean, when I need to get my feelings out and I use art to do that, I don't go paint a pretty picture. It usually looks like scribbles and dark pencil marks, but it's definitely freeing. But if people make preschool like art on purpose and with in right mind, I don't really think it's worth anything.. at all.

See, I think it's great that people pour their emotions into art, and that they're using it as a constructive way to search for truth. buuutttt I really don't want to stare at it all day long in a museum. I think there really needs to be a divide between "art" and "expression." Yes, art is an expression, but expression in and of itself is not necessarily art.

I'd stare at it. xD 🤷‍♀️

But it's expressive and emotional.

Okay okay *makes a show of collecting thoughts to launch into a long rant*
Basically, there was this dude who taped a banana to a wall using duct tape, and it sold for like $20,000 to an art museum. So then, a couple weeks later, some dude walks in, makes a huge show of removing the banana from the wall, and then he eats it in front of a huge crowd of people constantly making comments about how wonderful tasting this banana is. It was redonculus. Yes. Redonculus is a word. Thank you.

What?? Was it specially grown or something? How'd he get them to buy it for so much?!

Lol!!! It was not specially grown or anything, it was just "an expression from the bottom of someone's heart" so naturally, of course, it brought in wayyyyyy too much money...
Idk all the specifics, but it was something ridiculous like that...

CC plus you mean? Which classes do you take?

Anika (on hiatus) | 95 comments Ik I’m late to this convo, but for me, art has to have a meaning. If that meaning happens to be shock value like a lot of modern art, I don’t think that it makes it any less an artistic creation. The “rules” of art are meant to be broken, and they have been again and again to bring us important movements like Realism and Impressionism and even Dadaism. There are some artists *coughAnishKapoorcough* who just use their art as a money making scheme. I think that a lot of the stuff that he churns out is more stupid than of artistic value, but maybe that’s the point? In order to see something as “good art” we build off of our previous perceptions of what “good art” means to us. I think that modern art is important! It challenges us to create new ideas of what art is, what counts as art, and what good art really is.
