Kate S | 6459 comments In honor of Melville Dewey (b. Dec 10, 1851), read any book that takes place in a library or bookstore OR a biography/memoir of a bookstore owner or librarian.

Please post any questions or comments about task 10.4 in this thread.

Yes. Even stationary bookshops can be unique.

I'd be surprised if that works, but it might. The bookstore must be the setting. The description sounds as if it is more about life itself.

Thanks, that was actually my question now that I think about it. Just didn’t frame it right. I appreciate the help. Merry Christmas!

Denise | 1835 comments In the Stacks: Short Stories about Libraries and Librarians by Michael Cart

The 3.27 rating is scaring me off a little, but I am tempted to give this a try. Does a short story anthology fit the spirit of the task?

Yes! This looks like all of the stories have the appropriate setting.

I can't remember where to post date of birth verifications, but will put it here since I am reading the author for this task.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5293 comments The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

This is a wild book and I'm questioning whether it counts for the task. This fantasy story is about a library and a group of librarians who each have a portion of the catalog to manage which they can do whether in or out of the library and they must use their catalog abilities. It fits the genre task if it doesn't work for vocation.

Elizabeth (Alaska) If I understand the question, "Takes place in a library" doesn't have to be a real place. Fiction works for this task.

Sorry - that wasn't clear at all. My question is does it count since they don't stay in the library setting throughout the book? They are in the library at the beginning and for a good bit at the end, but not more than half the time. For the rest of the book, the librarians are out in the world (often killing people:).

What a quirky book! Yes, you can count this book for this task. :-)

Coralie | 2776 comments How much of the book needs to be in the library or bookstore?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Coralie wrote: "How much of the book needs to be in the library or bookstore?"

We didn't have a percentage in mind, but the library should be prominent and an important part of the story. Leeway is certainly allowed, see Karen Michele's book just above.

Owlette | 718 comments Does establishment of the first public or subscription library in a country qualify for the task? I am reading The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. He was a person with many ideas and the means to enact them--a library in Philadelphia was one of them.

I don't think that will be enough as the book isn't centered on the library (Ben did so much!) and Franklin himself wasn't a librarian.
