The first two books are amazing, my favorite being the first one. But the last, Allegiant, is just bad. Really bad. Which makes me sad, because it had everything to be an epic conclusion to the series.
Just finished the first book in a 6 hour sprint that has kept me up all night. Is it amazing writing, no. But I can see why these books are addicting. Must sleep now.
Just finished Insurgent. The dramatic soap opera that is Tobias and Tris has began to grate on my nerves. They fight all the time about TRUST, and he is so mad at her for sacrificing herself that first he threatens to leave her if she doesn't quit that shit, but when she runs off and does just that, he follows her because her actions forced him too? He feels forced to follow her to almost curtain death because she's so great and he can't live without her -- come on! Which is it man? Still, I will read the last one because of the challenge and for better or worse, I want to know how it ends.
I think the whole book was mainly about Tris trying to deal with all that happened and struggling to find some purpose to hang on to. Tobias, I think, is trying to make her snap out of it and see the bigger picture but he just goes about it the wrong way. That's why I think they have all these issues. But, yeah, there was a lot of back and forth there.
Finally finished Allegiant. On the plus side, these books are quick reads with lots of action and a romance. But the whole thing is so heavy handed. Every talk these kids had was so intense. And yes, I get that they were in intense situations, but for serious, no 16 year old is that good. And the dialogue reminded me of Dawson's Creek in a bad way; every decision carrying all the weight in the world, if you know what I mean. I get that the author was trying to make a point that we are more than the sum of our parts, but there was something about how she went about it that ultimately I found less than entertaining.PS - Genetics and changes in genetics don't work that way. They just don't. Or we'd all have 6 fingers by now.
I finished Divergent last weekend and am currently waiting for the rest of the series to arrive in my mailbox. I had just finished a Sylvia Plath marathon, so it took me awhile to get used to the less impressive writing. But the book is so fast paced and exciting, I am impatient to get to the next ones. Even if they end up not living up to my expectations, it will be nice to (hopefully) get some closure.
Insurgent (to me) was a bit underwhelming. The character interaction really made it difficult for me to enjoy the story. It was important nonetheless. I assume it was all necessary to set up the third book. Maybe?
I haven't yet lost interest in the concept. I'm still excited to see where this goes. On to Allegiant!
