If you watch horror movies or read horror stories you have definitely come across Richard Matheson in one form or another. His novels and screen plays have graced the page and screen from the 1950s to the 1990s (I am legend, Stir of Echoes, the Night Stalker, Nightmare at 20,000 feet... just to name a few). Hell House was a rare find for me. I was looking for something creepy to read one night and found this book in a search for classic horror authors. It was quite a pleasant surprise to discover Richard Matheson. Little did I know, but I had already seen several of his works adapted to film and TV over the years.

Hell house plays on the desolate haunted house in the middle of no where theme, with a group of paranormal investigators locked inside for a week in search of the afterlife. It's fantastic old school horror. I finished the book then of course had to watch the movie right after, which was another pleasant surprise. I had never heard of this film until reading the book. It's great! I do advise reading the book first; knowing the story will help you tolerate some of the bad 1970s special effects much better. Roddy McDowell stands out in the movie as the best actor, and his performance keeps you invested. I highly recommend both of these horror classics from another era.

I've watched the movie many times thanks for the recommendation for the book. Melanie.
