“That’s just the Prologue,” I assured him. “You could skip that, if you like.” He shook his head, eyes fixed on the page, smiling. “If the author thought it was worth his writing it down, then it’s worth my reading it. I dinna mean to miss a single word.”

Finally! This book was a looong time coming. It didn’t quite come out in time for my mid-November birthday, but it did keep me occupied for most of the long Thanksgiving weekend. I listened to the wonderful Davina Porter while I was driving, but I spent most of my time with the text. When I turned the final page, I felt I’d had a nice long visit with good friends. I know that some critics feel that Gabaldon gives too much attention to humdrum details of daily living (meal preparation, diaper changing, laundry and trips to the privy), but I love all the details. Details turn characters into real people.

Not that most of this book was humdrum. The saga continues with battles, betrayals, births, deaths and reunions. It felt so good to appease my curiosity about so many characters. And naturally, there’s another cliffhanger ending and another long wait for the next book.
