What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Read this series around 2006-2008 ish. First book in the series focuses on the vampire prince finding his true mate in a human. I think she was an archeologist. I vividly remember something happening to one of the vampire males in the book is that he gets buried and chained so he cannot escape but ends up surviving on rats and other burrowing creatures until he eventually “feels” his mate. Spans decades with each book focusing on a different pairing
