May 5th is Cinco de Mayo. Read a book set in Mexico or written by a Mexican author (by birth or by residence). Required: If the GRs metadata does not indicate the book's setting or the author's birthplace/residence, you must provide a link to an outside source for verification purposes when you post.

message 12: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments Wondering if this has enough information. The book is Outpost (Razorland, #2) by Ann Aguirre and in the author's biography there's a line that says " She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in sunny Mexico with her husband, children..."

Is that good enough or should I look for another source as well?

Thank you!

Lauren (laurenjberman) Is this OK - Wild Orchids by Karen Robards ?

Setting is listed as Cancún. Thanks

That's fine. Just include that info when you post your completed task.

Since there's not a lot of information in the book's description or reviews, you'll probably need to read it to find out. As long as at least 50% of the book takes place in Mexico it'll work and you'll need to explain how the book fits when you post.

No, that's fine. Guillermo del Toro works and the coauthor doesn't disqualify the book.

I've not read it but it's listed in the 1001 catalogue as a Mexican novel. Not sure if it would be enough as it is also showing as being set in Texas as well.

The author was born in Australia and lives in Ireland. So, to work for this task, that means the book must be set at least 50% in Mexico. From the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, it appears that most of the book takes place in Texas with just a brief stop in Acapulco. However, I haven't read it, so I can't tell you for sure. If you end up reading the book and half of it does indeed take place in Mexico, you can use it here but you'll just need to explain how it fits the task in your completed task post.

I don't think so. It starts in Mexico, but most of the plot takes place in Albania.

Fair enough. It was just a thought. I may read it anyway, and if it won't fit here, it may fit somewhere else.

It's a really fun book. All the Mrs. Pollifax books have been approved for 30.1 - job changer.

message 49: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments So I'm contemplating this book but not sure if I can make it work here.

The Highlander (The Rise of the Aztecs, #1) by Zoe Saadia

Is the series title enough to confirm a location? If it's not, does the link to purchasing it on Amazon work, where it says "Set amidst the adventure and intrigue of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica..." and some of the reviews mention it being set among the Aztecs? It's such a small book that I can't really find anything more concrete than that. All of this assuming I also get it approved for ebook length afterwards, of course lol

Thank you!

It appears to be set in Texcoco, which according to Wikipedia, "was a major Acolhua city-state in the central Mexican plateau region of Mesoamerica." So, the best thing to do would be to provide the Wikipedia link in your post when you claim the completed task to confirm setting.
