The book “I’ll be gone in the dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer” is basically Law & Order but ten times better. The author Michelle McNamara is the Olivia Benson of this novel. McNamara is a true crime journalist who created the blog, “True Crime Diary” when she was only 14. She gained interest in true crime sadly after a church member she knew was randomly killed close to her home.
McNamara started to blog about random sexual assaults, murders, and robberies around California; these assaults would later be known as the work of the East Area Rapist (No Pants Rapist) aka The Golden State Killer. McNamara's work started to take off and she soon gained the attention of not only her head researcher and fan Gilian Fylnn but also the country. McNamara sacrificed her life to get justice for the investigating families who have experienced the detrimental effects of the “No pants rapist”.He would target new families who just moved in or women living alone, then stalk his victims for weeks and track their every move. He would be in their house while they were sleeping and at night would sneak into his entrance and attack his victims, after leaving them gone in the dark.
Throughout the book my heart was remorseful for the victims and the author. The author dedicated her whole life to solving this case. She would sometimes refuse to leave her house because she treated this case like it was her child. She became so engulfed with the case that she died later in her sleep due to mixing dangerous drugs. It is heartbreaking to read that she died before she could even watch her daughter grow up. The book does an amazing job of explaining every one of the victims. McNamara is truly gifted at writing true crime. The description and details made me think I was living in the moment with the victims. I would sometimes have to close the book during the scenes that involved sexual assaults because it was unbearable and shocking to read. I wouldn’t recommend reading this book if you have can’t deal with serious issues like rape and kidnapping. I would suggest reading this book if you like Law & Order.
