## Kim E's 2022 Challenging Corner ##

My goals for 2022:While reading 75 books I hope they at least partly fall into the categories/challenges below. Most of the books will crossover across much of this. For example AMMP has an annual Badge Lover's Challenge that collects books by genre.
My favorite group for completing challenges is AMMP (A Million More Pages), so it plays a huge role in how many things go. I'm convinced half of it is because of those pretty shiny buttons for accomplishments. I'd love to be part of a few of the team challenges this year but that depends on real life.
Colorful Coverage
Driving the Highways (States) Just saw the category for that in this group, which will be a great way for me to find choices for 2022.
Continue reading books from Around The World.
A - Z Friends (I loved the idea of the A to Z Villain's in 2021 until I realized that posting the results would out the killers, etc. in my mystery reads and be spoilers to others so I stopped that one quickly).
I'd like to read books that are recommended from celebrity reading lists (Reese, Jenna with GMA, Oprah, etc.)
Let's see where I get with my pages of series this year. The list keeps expanding in all these book challenges that ask me to read the first book in a series.
1 nonfiction book a month (maybe just one of these could be related to the presidents?).
Loving doing what I call Bks2Film this year, and then my reward is watching the movie afterwards.
I thought I did so well this year reading current books yet when the Goodreads awards were just released so few were on there, darn it. I'll keep trying.
Award winners (& many are classics at this point) from Goodreads. Pulitzer, National Book Awards, Lambda Literary Awards, Audie Awards, The Edgar Awards, etc. There are so many.
I'm in love with this birthday book a year I'm seeing around here (enabler Alissa always awes me), so I think I will START that and just see how many years I achieve in 2022. Pretty sure this will be a multi year process & I'm okay with that. Actually saw a challenge online called the Family Tree related to this, where you read a book for year of your family tree. I may combine these.
Badge Lover's BadgesThey are completed by genre (1 badge for each 5 books in genres that typically include Mystery/Thriller, Contemporary, Audiobook, Horror, Nonfiction, Adventure, Autobiography, etc.,)
Colorful CoverageThis is the color of the cover or the color itself is in the title. (For example a BLUE cover and all it's variations, or the word BLUE in the title)

Seriously SolvingIf I listed every series I have on OneNote at the moment, under construction, it would take, well you guys know. Instead, I'm going to just list a few to see if I can tackle as much as possible.
As I'm typing this I'm on the final two books of the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo (clapping quietly), and I've made great progress on my favorite series, In Death by J.D. Robb. Let 2022 be more fruitful.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Chesapeake Bay Saga by Nora Roberts
Dublin Murder Squad by Tana French
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
Rizzoli & Isles by Tess Gerritsen
Secondly SeriesAny other series I get past book one in 2022, or others I'm farther along that I work on beyond the above.
Books2FilmThis is something I have really enjoyed in 2021 and hope to continue. Film can be either the big screen or adapted for television or the streaming channels.

I love the "through my life" challenge. I am definitely going to add that next time. Seems very interesting
Good luck, Kim!!
Good luck, Kim!!
Ooh, good luck. I might look into Books2Film, I do have a lot, and have inadvertently read a lot this year, with 2 more before the end of it. Problem is I can't seem to see the difference in mediums, and just get annoyed at the changes! I just tried watching the adaptation of Malory Towers, and they decided to change the backstory of the main character, it really annoys me - I get some changes have to be made, but if you don't like the way a character was portrayed, don't make things up and then say it's based on the book!
Wow, looks like you will be busy, but have a nice variety of ideas!I also try to tackle new releases from the GR Choice Awards. I managed to read five (I think) winners this year before the announcement!
Happy reading. :)
Kim, this challenge looks like it will give you a very nice variety. I am working on A Court of Thorns and Roses and Anne of Green Gables; hoping to finish up those series this year. And I'm excited to see you might try to read Percy Jackson and the Olympians, such a fun series and seemed to get the kids interested in mythology, so that was something. I'm lurking here to see the good books you pick. Best wishes, my friend!
Kim, that's a lot of freedom and variety in your challenges, I'm sure even you as a mood reader will have no problem finding the right books. I tried the guardrails thing, sorry to report, it did not work for me. I hope you'll have more luck with it, but if not, who cares? Jut read what you're in the mood for, in the end it will work out well.I'll watch this closely to see what you think of your picks, happy reading!

I had considered something similar after encountering it a few years ago, but this seemed the open opportunity to go for it.

That's good ! I really tried this last year to read more current books, hoping I'd encounter a few I'd want to vote towards. There's always going back to older years :-)

Sometimes I want some rails to be productive, then at others I throw that out the window and just read whatever catches my eyes. I figure if I accomplish 33% I'm calling it a win.
So I altered my 2022 goals some, not by eliminating or condensing because that's so not me, but by adding the Motley challenge for the first time this year.Yesterday my niece put out the call wanting to do this year's PopSugar challenge so it's now been added. I can't deny her anything when it comes to books since she's only five years younger & followed me around for years gathering her own sets of books at the library or bookstore at the same time I did. The only problem is that since my stroke she reads at least twice the volume I do on any given day, but I love doing this with her.

Good luck with the extra two challenges, I contemplated Motley challenge last year but was a fail, so not even going to look at Popsugar!
I usually wait until the end of the month to post books read, and I haven't decided if I'm going to post a monthly summary yet or not, so I wanted to post first book finished for the year. The Picture of Dorian Gray: An Annotated, Uncensored Edition by Oscar Wilde
4 stars 1/7/22
This book, because it includes so much information well beyond the actual story itself took me a long time to read and digest, reminding me of my Shakespeare class in high school, but I'm the better for it.
The book begins with a detailed explanation of not only author Oscar Wilde's life, but about the controversary and later trial of Wilde. The morality of inner versus outer beauty is the obvious theme, but there are so many deeper ones. I will read Wilde again

I think I had that copy too. The story was nuts; with enough morally gray characters to boot.

Completed the following:Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman 1/10/22 2 stars
Very erotic, more so than I actually prefer, because I feel that overwhelms any story line to me.
A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Fowler 1/10/22 3 stars
So glad I not only read a book I owned, but that I did so as part of a group buddy read on here. I haven't done as nearly as many of those as I'd like. This book would be such a good one for a book club, with so many ways to go on it. Much went where I thought it would, but it also gave me things to think over and that's always good.
January 2022January Thoughts
I tend to start off every year gung-ho, and excited for the year of reading, connecting again with Goodread friends, and documenting well my journey for the year. Keeping that up (especially the documentation) is a whole other beast. Let's hope I can find a way of staying connected, reading regularly, and sharing the experience throughout this year (fingers crossed).
Books Read in January
1 - The Picture of Dorian Gray: An Annotated, Uncensored Edition by Oscar Wilde
1/7/22 4 stars 295 pages
Already discussed .
2 - Fallen by Linda Castillo
1/7/22 4 stars 320 pages
This is 13th and most current book in this series and I almost completed the entire series and it's novellas in 2021. The series is set in an Amish concentration in Ohio with the Chief of Police being a former member of the community. Following the development of Kate as she maneuvers the events in the community is why I love so many series. I will eagerly look forward to the future installments.
3 - Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement by Tarana Burke
1/8/22 5 stars 272 pages
When Alyssa Milano put the #MeToo hashtag onto Twitter several years ago I was one among millions that began to share my experiences publicly for the first time, and the shared empathy was a larger gift than I expected. I did not know until a few days later about Tarana Burke and have made a point to learn more about her.
4 - A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Fowler
1/10/22 3 stars 311 pages
I'm so glad I ventured into the Buddy Read on here with everyone.
5 - Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman
1/10/22 2 stars 248 pages
I read erotica and typically enjoy but this was so full of erotica that the story I felt got lost.
6 - The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
1/14/22 4 stars 406 pages
A story within a story that kept me guessing throughout much of it.
7 - Starry Night by Debbie Macomber
1/15/22 4 stars 256 pages
Perfect book for the holiday season.
8 - Fudge Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke
1/17/22 3 stars 304 pages
The fifth in this series, and a series I have neglected. I often find myself wondering if I will ever attempt any of the recipes in these books. I like MC Hannah, who will stand up for her friends and family, even as she is constantly dealing with her own insecurities.
9 - If I Stay by Gayle Forman
1/18/22 4 stars 201 pages
A reread to prepare for the next book, I think kept me better away from the emotional tears I shed the first time.
10 - Where She Went by Gayle Forman
1/18/22 4 stars 264 pages
How does one move on after a tragedy? This is a time when I wish the author had completed this series with one more addition. I would really like to know where it progressed.
11 - The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur
1/20/22 4 stars 256 pages
I follow this author on Instagram and her words often touch me in short form.
12 - The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
1/21/22 4 stars 323 pages
So, if I follow in the steps of Stella as she seeks to find a solution to her insecurities I wonder if I could have the same success? (smile) A delightful read
13 - Blue by Danielle Steel
1/21/22 3 stars 336 pages
This is a departure from the typical Danielle Steel formula, and was a book perfect for my social worker heart when Ginny encountered homeless thirteen-year-old Blue in a park.
14 - Books Can Be Deceiving by Jenn McKinlay
1/22/22 3 stars 282 pages
I'm realizing that as much as I love my suspenseful thrillers, there is a gift in these cozy mystery series that I'm starting to read. Lindsay is the director of the library in her city in Connecticut, so the combination of characters there play a large role. I look forward to seeing how a particular bitter librarian evolves or not over time.
15 - If You Ask Me by Betty White
4 stars 1/23/22 258 pages
Written more as a series of stories, all a reminder why I've been a fan since she was on Password.
16 - Here We Go Again: My Life in Television by Betty White
1/24/22 4 stars 320 pages
I've adored her since I was a little girl, and we still laugh out loud almost every night to The Golden Girls as I'm helping my mother get to bed at night. I learned so much more about this treasure of a woman.
17 - Lord of the Flies by William Golding
1/24/22 3 stars 182 pages
One of those books that I can now say I've read and just move on
18 - The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
1/26/22 5 stars 272 pages
I didn't know when I started reading this book or the one following that I was doing so during the annual remembrance of the Holocaust, but I'm glad. I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, and the intense quiet throughout as we each were trying to fully comprehend on a personal level is something I will never forget. This is a book that I strongly recommend one do in audio form.
19 - Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
1/28/22 5 stars 137 pages
I believe this is a perfect book to introduce the concepts and events of The Holocaust, and the events during WWII - if parents these days can handle their children having any discomfort or awareness of history.
20 - Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis
1/30/22 2.5 stars 230 pages
Despite having a daughter in my household that took me down the Twilight road with midnight premieres and all (I literally started Twitter as a Twilight fan and still have dear friends all these years later)- I'm not a fan of shifter books. I'm not thrilled with this one. but am actually going to read the second .
21 - Action Park: Fast Times, Wild Rides, and the Untold Story of America's Most Dangerous Amusement Park by Andy Mulvihill
1/30/22 3 stars 342 pages
My favorite crime podcast covered the documentary about Action Park, so when I learned there was a book it became a must read. Written by a son of the creator of the park gave it added interest for me.
22- Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
1/31/22 4 stars 179 pages

Plans for February
Just hoping I can keep documenting what I read, settle into my challenges, and stay connected.
You had a great January, Kim! I definitely want to read Unbound, Number the Stars, If I Stay and Where She Went as well as everything by Betty White. I'm having book envy. :-)
You've read 22 books in January??? Go, Kim! I have a few Betty White books on my TBR, and hope to read them soon.
You've had a great month Kim. I'll have to find one of Betty White's books. What a lady. Good luck in Feb. Keep mixing the variety and you'll keep your interest going.
What a great reading month, Kim!! So glad you enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale. I love that story within a story, and its gothic undertones.
Woot-woot!

Bill wrote: "You've had a great month Kim. I'll have to find one of Betty White's books. What a lady. Good luck in Feb. Keep mixing the variety and you'll keep your interest going."If you do, I'd suggest in audio form because Betty narrates them herself. What a gift she was to us

It took me a bit to catch onto that so once I did I restarted the book and that helped place all in perspective so much better. One of those books I wonder why I kept off to the side all this time.

2021 was in many ways more difficult and enduring than anything I ever imagined since the very early months of the pandemic from 2020. It's hard to try to rise one out of my own issues with hope when there is so much anger all around between friends, family, and strangers, as is just safely trying to use my walker going to grocery store, so let's hope 2022 is the BEGINNING of a new dawn. And let with this NEW DAWN of 2022 be the year I keep up my documentation here of books read, and perusing those updates of some great book enablers I adore here.
Given all this, my goal for 2021 is to read 75 books. More details will be listed below.
