Lea (leaspot) | 3699 comments Veronica, I always love your list - it makes mem want to read what you're reading. I'm looking forward to reading You Love Me with you when you get to it, and then I have to watch the show.

I enjoyed Atonement, Anxious People, Pachinko, If It Bleeds, In Cold Blood and The Testaments, I really hope you do also when you get around to reading them.

I've got Under the Whispering Door, Malibu Rising, People We Meet on Vacation, Home Before Dark, The Reading List, and Beautiful World, Where Are You on my individual list, hope we both enjoy them when we get to them.

I love that you've got the Cormoran Strike books on your list, I need to get caught up in that series too. It almost made my list, but I had to cut something.

After Anne Rice's recent passing, I considered adding The Mummy. I wonder how far along she was in the series, I think the last book was supposed to come out this year. Do you know anything?

Ioana | 2158 comments Great list, Veronica! I've only read a few (The Evening and the Morning, Under the Whispering Door, Anxious People, Pachinko, In Cold Blood, The Golem and the Jinni, The Testaments, Home Before Dark, The Book Thief, Rebecca, The Secret Life of Bees, The Color Purple). Even if you don't get to read all of them, you so many wonderful choices, I'm sure you will have a great year of reading. Enjoy!

Those classics are top tier. I think I told you before that Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier , is your type of book. Drama, mystery, thriller and mild horror elements (very mild). I really think this will be one of your favorites.

The Golem and the Jinni (The Golem and the Jinni, #1) by Helene Wecker is just so atmospheric and beautiful; and that is just the cover. This book is just awesome. I really, really hope you enjoy this one. To me, it was perfect as is, and I am not sure about there being a sequel; but we shall see.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your reads.

Veronica (veraj121) | 232 comments Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe 1/1/22

The first book completed for the New Year. An excellent book to start the year off. So many themes one can tackle and discuss. I can type about this all day.

The only issue I have is the time discrepancies especially at the end with the death of Ms. Threadgoode. My brain is hurting over this.

Now I will watch the movie for the first time

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 800 comments Glad you have started the year well, hope you enjoy the film

The title gives you the ending. But what the 2 characters did with this knowledge was brave and adventurous. While some would have balled up in a corner and shutdown, they did as much as they could in the little time they had..Great read. A little Black Mirrorish lol

Mmmmmm. I only saw a few episodes from Black Mirror, and it leaves an impression. I may have to add this.

Kudos on your first read!

Veronica (veraj121) | 232 comments Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda

Talk about when perception is your reality goes wrong ( mind you I can't stand that statement. it is so toxic to me). Can you imagine being convicted and serving 14 months in jail for a double murder you did not commit. All because of your small townsy neighbours who extremely passive aggressive. Your whole town testify against you and have no idea what they are talking about. Only to be released from jail, go back to that town, and try to prove those people wrong... And to find the real answer. I am going to leave the story right there. You have to read to find out the rest. No spoiler alerts.. Nada.

This book has me looking at my neighbors sideways. And I do not live in a small community. But I am one of those who is outspoken and will question and confront. Oh I dont go along to get along.

Miranda knows how to twist and trigger. I couldnt guess this ending. This is a really quick read.

message 25: by Lea (new)

Lea (leaspot) | 3699 comments Great review of Such a Quiet Place. I read All the Missing Girls by Miranda and remember thinking she's messing with my mind. LOL. I'll definitely be adding this to my TBR.

Veronica (veraj121) | 232 comments The Chosen and the Beautiful The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

I dont know if I like this book. This one I have to absorb

This a retelling of the Great Gatsby told in Jordan Bakers point of view... The twist is she is Asian in high society 1910's and 20's. There is also a little bit of fantasy in the book that threw me off. This was different.

message 32: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 232 comments All Boys Aren't Blue by George Johnson

A great memoir on a one finding his gender identity and sexuality in the Black community. Excellent and soul searching. This is the first time I read a book whose household is sooo similar to how I was raised. I was able to relate to everything he experiences but as a female.

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters

This one confused me This was about transgenders. But I did not understand the wanting to share a baby between a transgender, a detransgender and a straight woman. I also didnt like the comparison of the races among the community. It did not sit well with me. But it was educational to see the lifestyle through different lenses
