There was some talk about what the difference is on the Discord. The stuff that's usually labeled magical realism seems to me to have the magic stuff being more matter of fact than in this book. Here there's talk of magic having a cost, etc, that smacks more of a magic system like a fantasy novel.

As far as the rest of the genres this might fit in, there are certainly parts that feel more like folktales (Orquidea's childhood). When, near the end (view spoiler) it felt more like a thriller in ways that were discordant with the folktale part.
