Merin's Second Climb Through her TBR
Glad you had a good reading year--I did too! Fingers crossed that we'll both have good years in 2022 as well.
First book of 2022 is complete! It was a carry-over from 2021, but I'd only gotten 45% of the way through it, soooo it counts!I really enjoyed Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder - it's my type of fantasy book, and I will definitely be checking out the second one in the series!
Rating: 4 stars
Book #2 of 2022 is finished! I listened to the audio version of Again Again and really enjoyed it. This was somewhat surprising, as I have a hit or miss relationship with E. Lockhart's writing (and this book has quite a low rating), so I'm glad it went my way, and I can cross another book off my TBR!Rating: 4 stars
Book #3: complete! I finished Invincible tonight, and while I didn't love it like I'd expected to, considering how much I'd enjoyed the previous books in the series, it was still a good read overall (or at least the parts I actually read, since I did some major skipping through until the last 100 pages or so).Rating: 3 stars
Book #4 is finished! I revisited the Lunar Chronicles universe by finally reading the collection of novellas entitled Stars Above. I loved getting to see our favorite characters again, and this officially crosses the series completely off my TBR.Rating: 4 stars
Book #5 is finished! I read the third installment in the Heartstopper series, which I liked, but not as much as everyone else seems to. There's something unrealistic imo about the conversations between the two main characters, and I felt like the issues brought up in this volume were almost beating me over the head yelling "PAY ATTENTION, THESE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT". I dunno. Everyone else loves this series to pieces, and then here I am just going "shrug, they're okay."Rating: 3 stars
Book #6 crosses another series off my TBR! I really loved Rogue, and thought it was an almost-perfect ending to the Croak trilogy. So glad to finally enjoy a series finale! It'd been a hot minute, LOL.Rating: 4 stars
Book #7: complete! Winterkeep was the fourth in the Graceling series, and honestly was my least favorite. It took a long time for me to become invested, the story just felt off when compared to the previous installments, and all in all it just wasn't as good as I'd wanted it to be. That being said, this crosses another series off my TBR, which is very exciting!Rating: 3 stars
Book #8 completes yet another series! Mortal Heart was a satisfying ending to the His Fair Assassins trilogy, although imo wasn't as strong as the first two books. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it, and hope to read the companion duology at some point.Rating: 4 stars
Book #9 is a reread! I decided this year that I wanted to try to read one original Nancy Drew book each month of 2022, and January's book was The Secret of the Old Clock. This is the only book of the series that I actually do own, so none of the others will be able to count towards this challenge. The books are not well written, to put it mildly, but the nostalgia is still strong!
Rating: 3 stars
Book #10 is From Lukov with Love, which I ADORED. Aside from getting a book off of my Kindle (which doesn't happen very often), this book was a perfect story to curl up with while watching the Winter Olympics. It was my kind of romance, and I definitely want to read more by this author.Rating: 5 stars
Book #11 is My Sergei: A Love Story, which is a nonfiction book about pairs skaters Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva, whose relationship ended tragically when Sergei died from a heart attack at the age of 28. The tears, y'all. So many tears.Rating: 5 stars
Book #12 - and the book that gets me to the top of Pike's Peak! - was Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill, which had been sitting on my Kindle since 2014. So glad to get it crossed off my TBR!Rating: 3 stars
First book for Mount Blanc is complete! #13 is Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour, which has been on my shelves since 2014. I'm sad I took so long to read this one, because everything about it was absolutely perfect.Rating: 5 stars
Book #14 is What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick. I liked this one, although I definitely had some issues with parts of it, namely how long it took for the story to actually get going. This book was overly long, but in the end I did enjoy it.Rating: 3.5 stars
Book 15 is Kiki's Delivery Service, which I purchased at the very end of 2021. My goal this year is to balance reading backlist titles that have been on my shelves for years, with reading my newer purchases in a timely fashion. This definitely fulfills the latter!Rating: 3 stars
Time to catch up a bit!Book #16 was Parkland: Birth of a Movement, which was added to my TBR in early 2021. I liked that this book didn't focus on the actual shooting at MSD in February 2018, but rather what happened afterward. I can only hope things do indeed change to make school shootings a thing of the past.
Rating: 5 stars
Book #17 was The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary. This was my first book by this author, and I picked it up in December 2021 after hearing some praise for the author. I enjoyed it quite a lot, even though there are definitely some heavy topics covered.Rating: 4 stars
#18 was Of Neptune by Anna Banks, which was the final book in a trilogy that I wanted to finish in 2022, so I checked off two goals with this one. Unfortunately, I didn't love it - it was an unnecessary addition to the series imo - but at least it's done!Rating: 3 stars
Book 19 was a very old e-arc that I received back in 2015. Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke finishes another series, which I could not recommend highly enough if you're a fan of historical fiction.Rating: 4.5 stars
Book #20 was a tiny novella I found on my Kindle while I was going through it last night. I'd totally forgotten Bridge of Snow even existed, but now it's made me want to reread The Winner's Trilogy again, which I really don't have time for. Go figure.Rating: 4 stars
Book 21 is my first DNF of 2022. I knew going in that there was a good chance I wouldn't like The Death of Jane Lawrence. I did manage to get to page 273 before quitting, but I realized I wasn't enjoying the book, and if I'd continued, it would've resulted in a very low rating. There are too many books out there to read, so I just decided to move on.
Book #22 is one that's been on my physical shelves since ... 2005? I was expecting more of an emotional punch from The Lovely Bones, but didn't receive that. As such, it was just a good book, one that was worth reading once, but that I'll never actually pick up again.Rating: 3 stars
Book #23 is A Spindle Splintered, a fun little fairytale retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I didn't realize there were only going to be two of these small-ish novellas, so I'll be able to cross this series off later this year.Rating: 4 stars
Book #24, and the one that got me to the top of Mount Blanc, is Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff! This book has been on my shelf since it was first released, so I'm so happy to have finally crossed it off, and hopefully I can go ahead and knock out the whole series this year.Rating: 4 stars
Back after nearly a month with another update! This has been a slow reading month for me, but I'm still chugging along on my TBR climb.Book #25 is Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall, which I found funny, charming, and heartbreaking in equal measures.
Rating: 4 sasrs
Book #26 is Eon, which is on my 22 Books to Read in 2022 list. Political fantasy is not my favorite, so this was very slow going. Finally finished it after working on it for over a month!Rating: 2.5 stars
Two books finished today! Book #27, The Hawthorne Legacy, gets me caught up on a series and ready for the final installment which will be released later this year. Book #28, Heart of Glass, completes a duology that I started reading back in 2012. Better late than never!Ratings: 4 stars for The Hawthorne Legacy and 3.5 stars for Heart of Glass
I participated in Becca's Bookoplathon this weekend, so got through four (!!!) books! Only one counts towards this challenge, though, so #29 is a reread of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by CS Lewis. This is one of my favorites, and it was fun to reread again!Rating: 4 stars
Book #30 is East by Edith Pattou! I've had this retelling on my TBR for probably a decade at this point, and finally decided to give it a go purely because it worked for the Buzzword Reading Challenge prompt for May. I'm sad I waited so long, because this was a good one!Rating: 4 stars
I've been reading a few books that don't count towards this challenge of late, but did finally cross #31 off my list! Paranormalcy by Kiersten White has been on my shelf since at least 2012, and had I read it when it was released, I think I would've enjoyed it more. It's still a solid three star read, but overall nothing special whatsoever.Rating: 3 stars
#32 is To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which was my Buzzword pick for this month, one of the books on my list of 22 books to read this year, AND had been sitting on my shelf since it was released in 2014. Very nice to cross it off my list!Rating: 4 stars
Two more books read! #33 was Easy by Tammara Webber, which had been on my Kindle since it was released, and #34 was Smoke and Iron, the fourth book in Rachel Caine's The Great Library series. I enjoyed both!Ratings: 4 stars for both
I've been reading a bunch of books that don't count towards this challenge, but I finally managed to get #35 crossed off with Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World. I picked this up last year upon its release, but never found time to read it. I'm so glad I put it on one of my 2022 to-read lists, though, because it was wonderful!Rating: 5 stars
Book #36, and the one that got me to the top of Mt. Vancouver, was one of my 22 Books to Read in 2022: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. I adore this author and both books of hers I've read - if you like historical fiction and haven't yet read any of her books, do yourself a favor and check her out!Rating: 5 stars
Book #37, and my first book towards the peak of Mt. Ararat, is Book of A Thousand Days by Shannon Hale. This is a retelling based on a lesser-known fairy tale. I loved the main character, Dashti, and her strength and stubbornness!Rating: 4 stars
Book #38 is another book off my 22 Books to Read in 2022 list! Anna and the French Kiss is a YA classic at this point, and I feel like I was one of the only people to not have read it. I'm glad I gave it a go, as I enjoyed it, even if there were some things in the story that irked me.Rating: 3.5 stars
Book #39 finishes off another series! I enjoyed Strange and Ever After, although I have to wonder what my rating would've been if I'd read it in a more timely fashion.Rating: 3.5 stars
Book #40 was my Buzzword pick for August - Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn was just as wild as I'd expected it to be! Another book from my 22 Books to Read in 2022 list has been completed!Rating: 4 stars
Time to catch up a bit! Book #41 was Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery, which was a gift I received last Christmas and finally managed to read nearly nine months later. I really loved it, and am so sad I waited so long!Rating: 5 stars
Book #42 is my Buzzword challenge pick for September, and that is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I really enjoyed this book, although it wasn't quite a five star read for me, as I was expecting more of an emotional punch considering the subject matter and didn't quite get there. Nonetheless, it was still a great book!Rating: 4 stars
Two more books read, which means I only have 4 more to reach my goal!Book #43 was The One by Kiera Cass, the third and final book in her Selection series. I enjoyed it more than book two, but not as much as book one.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Book #44 is another final book in a series, and that is Rivals in the City. This is a really fun historical mystery series with a great main character, an adorable romance, and lots of intrigue and danger to keep you on your toes!Rating: 4 stars
Book #45 is The Bone Season, a book that's been on my Kindle since its release in 2013. I'm so glad I finally gave it a read, because I really enjoyed it!Rating: 4 stars
Book #46 is another book that's been on my Kindle for close to a decade. Unteachable was ultimately not the book for me, as I didn't enjoy much of anything in the story. But at least it brings me within 2 books of completing my mountain!Rating: 2 stars
The penultimate book of my climb up Mt. Ararat was A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, which was another book that's been on my Kindle for over a decade! This one was so good, y'all. I'm sad I waited so long to finally give it a read!Rating: 5 stars
Book #48 - and the one that gets me to the top of Mt. Ararat and completes this challenge - was the prequel novella to The Bone Season. This is nothing special on its own, but does provide a bit more background to our main narrator, so is worth a read nonetheless.Rating: 3 stars
And with that, I've officially completed my Mount TBR Challenge for 2022! I will not be doing anymore updates on this thread, but am looking forward to tackling another pile of TBR books next year!
