Ashleigh | 918 comments Hi everyone! I'm Ashleigh, your team captain for this round and I hope everyone is as excited to get started as I am. I'm joined by my two lovely co-captains Christina and Daniela, who I've had the pleasure of playing alongside in the past.

This is my 7th time playing UNO so I'd like to think you are all in good hands with myself, Christina and Daniela.

If we have any new players, please feel free to ask any questions and we'll help you as best we can :)

How does everyone feel about using the planning spreadsheet template? I personally like using it, but in the past we've had some people not like to use it. What works best for everyone?

message 14: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1243 comments Hey y'all! My name is Christina (she/her) and I live in Austria. Like Ashleigh already said, we've all been doing this for quite a while and are happy to help out in any way, if anyone has some questions.

I'm currently checking out a bunch of new tv shows, but I can't wait for Feb 1 to officially get back into reading! At this point I mainly listen to audiobooks, and I'll read almost any genre, especially if a reading challenge asks for it. My favourites are thrillers and contemporaries though, preferably with some queer, health and/or poc rep mixed in.

And here's the link to my uno shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Denise (drams5) | 730 comments Hi - I'm Denise. I live in the U.S. (currently buried in snow) and will read just about anything. I think my favorite thing about participating in the Uno challenge is that I always read more during this challenge. I typically average about a book a week, but there's something so motivating about knowing we really need a book with a pink cover or a book with a hedgehog to complete a challenge.

Looking forward to virtually meeting everyone and seeing your recommendations!

Denise (drams5) | 730 comments Tell me more about this planning spreadsheet...I don't mind using one. Would you want people to use it to list the books they are committing to reading or just the books they are thinking about?

I'm thinking about these...
If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won't) by Betty White
...it's very short, but should be ok as long as it's over 100 pages, right? I think it was around 130 when I checked.

Dishing the Dirt (Agatha Raisin, #26) by M.C. Beaton
Would probably work for one of the green cards and I can usually read this series pretty quickly.

And I just won a copy of this, which I thought might work for a yellow card, but I'm not sure. I'll probably read it soon either way.
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

Anyone else have anything planned?

message 17: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Hello everyone :) I'm Daniela and I also live in Austria. This is my 7th year playing, I've been captain a few times with Christina as my co-captain. University is quite stressful this year, so I'm happy to "only" help out as co-captain lol

I'm also doing the popsugar challenge, I'm in the middle of figuring out my first two books that work for both popsugar and uno.

My bookshelf for uno is here

message 19: by Amanda (last edited Jan 27, 2022 09:01AM) (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 69 comments Hey team! :)
My name is Amanda and I live in the US (California). This is my first time playing UNO, but I have played in many team challenges in other groups.
I read all sorts of fiction, but my favorite genre is fantasy. I love all fantasy, from childrens, to YA, to bloody grimdark fantasy. I also read a lot of romance and thrillers.
When I'm not reading, I like to knit, garden, and watch shows on Netflix. :)

I do like using planning spreadsheets. I think they can be very helpful.

Alejandra | 227 comments Hi, I’m Alejandra or Alex, she/her. I’m from Colombia, really exited about UNO, this would be my fourth time playing.
Im a child psychiatrist working full time and a single mom of a teen, but I unwind with books so I always make the time for reading. I might be slow to update spreadsheets and post whenever I’m on call, but I’ve always managed. if I’m stuck I’ll let you guys know.

I like romance, historical and paranormal, Fantasy mostly. But I’ll read anything with words

Im on my phone now, I’ll post the link later

message 21: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 730 comments Hi Alex-- I usually use GR from my phone. I wish the mobile site was a little more use friendly. I often have to do a quick update until I can get to my laptop, too.

message 22: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1243 comments Welcome Denise, Amanda and Alex - nice to have you on the team! :)

It's okay if you don't have time to update every single day, just remember to check in at least once a week so we know you're still playing, and mid-month is usually when the mini challenges start so it'd be great if everyone could be around for those too :)

Also, the GR app / mobile version really could be more user friendly, I don't understand why it still isn't.

message 23: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (teewho) | 195 comments Hey everyone! I'm Kristie and I'm from Australia. This is my favourite challenge and will be my fourth time playing!

I read read pretty much everything except for contemporary, but my go to would be fantasy. I look forward to playing to playing this challenge with you all :D

I usually use the planning sheet to base what we still need to fill in for the challenge, but I'm also a bit of a mood reader, so sometimes it's just what I pick up to read. I also have a lot of coloured books ( I've been saving up, haha)

message 25: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 918 comments Welcome everyone!

Denise - I think we'd have to check to see if Reckless Girls fits for yellow as there's a lot of green and pink also going on. Think I'll be reading that book too for UNO, it's one of my most anticipated reads of the year! But Dishing the Dirt would most definitely work for green.

message 26: by Christina (last edited Jan 19, 2022 04:59AM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1243 comments Here's the link to our tracking sheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Ashleigh will also add the link to her masterpost above to be found again easier :)

I added my first planned read as an example:
Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire works for 6 (author name) and 7 (7th book in a series).
Please add all options a book works for so we can choose which card to use a book for and can do some shuffling around if needed by the end of the month.

Please only add books you really plan on reading that month, or just add your book once you've finished it, whichever way you personally prefer to do it is fine.

Any more questions? Just ask :)

message 27: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1243 comments Oh, one more thing re: our tracking sheet:
When you add a book, please add it with a link to the exact version of the book you read + also remember to shelf that same edition. Makes things much easier for us captains :)

message 28: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 69 comments I added one of the books I plan to read to the tracking sheet. Let me know if I need to fill it out differently.
The book I'm planning to read is a #2 in a series, and also works for an S character (Sebastian).

Yes that's great, next time just add the character's name too (Sebastian in this case), but this time I've added it for you :)

Are all 3 dogs beagles? We only have one beagle, but we love him! He's the best reading companion. :)

message 33: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 69 comments Do you want us to focus on reading for the first few hands at a time, or should we plan and read for any of the given hands?
(I found a good book for Blue 1, but that isn't until hand #8)

Most teams usually get through all their hands anyway, so there's not really a need to work through them in order. Harder cards to fill are 5s (especially if we have ten of them like we do this month *eyeroll*), 7s and 8s, so the letters I, V + E respectively, possibly the Reverses, and of course the coloured cards.

The coloured cards we usually work towards getting claimed early on so we can get them out of the way quickly and don't have to worry about filling them later.

message 35: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 730 comments If we need it, I have this here to read:
The Readers' Room by Antoine Laurain

The main character's name is Violaine Lepage (so would work for #7). Or I can save it for another month. It's fairly short.

message 36: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 918 comments As Christina said, 5's, 7s and 8's are usually pretty hard to fill especially when you mix them with colours, so yeah Denise if you could read that one for 7 Red, that would knock one of the hard ones out.

message 37: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 69 comments I can read Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer for Blue 1 (first in series) and The Impostor (Liar's Club, #2) by Celeste Bradley for Red 5 (title).
I'll put them on the spreadsheet as soon as i get to my computer.

Happy to do it! I just didn't want to claim two color cards if others were still looking. I own them both, so let me know if anyone else has their heart set on red 7 or green 4.

Saar The Book owl | 169 comments Hi everyone, my name is Saar the Book Owl and this is my 3rd (I think) doing UNO. I will check what I can read :)

Saar The Book owl | 169 comments My choices so far:
7 Blue: has an author first name or surname starts with V: (sorry, it's a non - translated Dutch book)
Waarom we geen hondenmelk drinken - de carnistische keuze by Willem Vermaat

3 Green: has an author first name or surname starts with H: (sorry, it's a non - translated Dutch book)
Er is niemand bij de kalveren by Alina Herbing

Sara | 68 comments Hello! I'm Sara (she/her), I live in the US and this is my second year playing Uno. I'm pretty much open to any genre and I'm super excited to play this year! I'm checking in quickly right now from my phone but I'll grab my computer later today and look over what cards still need to be filled and help make a plan. I love spreadsheets!

here's my uno shelf

As a team, do we think these books are 50% blue and red respectively? (Or possibly too much grey /pink?) I really don't know; I think we should decide together!

I picked them because I found them on the UNO red and blue cover lists. But if those don't work I can find something else. :)

message 45: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (teewho) | 195 comments I have a yellow 9 but my edition doesn't seem to be on Goodreads, lol. The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin, it's the Fable Crate edition.

Saar The Book owl | 169 comments Maybe the blue one is okay, but the red one is more dark pink? I don't know.

message 47: by Sara (new)

Sara | 68 comments It looks like most of it is worked out already, but I can read The Hunting Party for yellow 9, When No One is Watching for blue 1, and The Isle of the Lost for green 1. I'll just fill out the spreadsheet as I read them so we can fit them in wherever they're needed later.

Here's what I usually use to decide cover colors (for myself). I look at a book and go with what my first impression would be if someone handed it to me and said "what color is this book?" Would I say blue? Or blue and gray and black? I think both of these covers would work for blue/red because to me, they seem mostly blue or red. I'll agree that the red is reddish pink, but I think it works... especially if it's listed on the UNO red shelf.

message 49: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 730 comments P.S. I spent the day at the largest bookstore in the U.S. today. One afternoon really wasn't enough, but I was out of money. 😂

message 50: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra | 227 comments I can read Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
which would work for green 4 (so many characters starting with F)

I can also read Ready Player One
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I can check what else I have lying around
