Smilla's Sense of Snow
Peter Høeg
Date Read: 17/01/22
Rating:⭐⭐⭐

Start of my review- It's a lot of effort for very little pay-off. It's a wonderfully convoluted story that involves, governments, drug cartels, mad scientists and lots of wealthy and/or connected people. It starts with a boy's death but ends with an international conspiracy. Sounds great but the execution was lacking for me on two essential fronts, the titular character and the writing style.

Devil-Devil
Graeme Kent
Date Read:28/02/22
Rating:⭐⭐⭐

Start of my full review- So I needed to read book set in the Solomon Islands. There are few books set in the Solomon Islands and even fewer available through my public library. Therefore by simple fact that it was available I read it. And though I didn't have high hopes, it was actually pretty decent. I'm not a massive mystery, especially cozy mystery, fan. I read one of those African Detective Ladies Agency or whatever books and hated it. It was dull. This had a tendency to veer in that direction but Kent was much better at using the landscape, history and culture. Not only did he deftly weave these elements in but the made them central. Our protagonist is trying to make his western education mesh with his cultural duties. As a police officer under colonial rule this is not always easy or legal to do.

The Animals in That Country
Laura Jean McKay
Date Read: 28/08/22
Rating: ⭐️⭐️

Start of my full review - I found Jean really hard to like. I liked how good she was with Kimberly, but even there she was selfish at times. I have no concept of what it's like to be addicted to a substance so badly that one becomes an embarrassment. I could empathise with Jean, but I so very badly wanted her to stop being a f*ck up. I so very much wanted her to get control of her life. But that is not the book Ms McKay wrote. So needless to say I dreaded every interaction between Jean and any human, which is pretty much the first third of the book.
