Never too Late to Read Classics discussion

Our new year begins with a Buddy Read of The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper.
This is the second book in The Dark is Rising set of books, but works well as a stand alone. It has a new set of characters and is set during the twelve days of Christmas, so I think it is a perfect choice for this time of year.
Plus, I've read it twice and plan on reading it again.
It's a terrific book!

I can recommend The Dark is Rising as well as the rest of the series. Tomorrow I will begin the 4th book, The Grey King.

They are all so good!

I decided to reread Over Sea, Under Stone first, and I'm glad I am, since I forgot how good it is.
And I'm finally out of my reading slump, thanks to this book.

Great idea Rosemarie! I enjoyed Over Sea, Under Stone and thought it was a good introduction to the character Merriman. I finished The Dark is Rising. I liked it too. I kept flashing back to other fantasy books I’ve read like Game of Thrones (the theme of Winter is coming and the battle of good vs evil) and Harry Potter and even Daphne Du Marier’s The House on the Strand, with its time travel aspect.

I read Over Sea, Under Stone before Christmas and The Dark Is Rising over Christmas as it is set. I plan on reading the whole series and am currently reading Greenwitch

I enjoyed both of the first 2 books. The first one is more like a good old-fashioned children's mystery with some magic whereas in the second we really see the magical world that is underlying the story.

I've just finished Over Sea, Under Stone and agree with your assessment. It's a good book but the rest of the books in the series are something special.

I've just finished The Dark Is Rising and all I can say is Wow! It's my third time reading the book, but this time Will is the same age as my grandson, who turned eleven in January. It puts a new perspective on the events in the book for me.

I have these and I'd like to read them in order. Hopefully I can start in February.

I am late to this group but have now found a copy of the Dark is Rising. My copy has gone to grandchildren in another country but I had read this series to my children and then to my grandchildren and all just loved it.
Are we reading a title a month? I saw that Wind in the Willows is for June?

For some books, if they're part of a trilogy, we'll take longer.
Plus, you can comment on any of the books at any time, since the month given is just the starting time of the buddy read.

I've read Over Sea, Under Stone and The Dark is Rising now.
Both were pretty good but when they start moving back and forth in time to do things it always seems a little dumb to me. Why not just get it done before all this trouble starts? I'm probably the only sci-fi fan who doesn't really like time travel.

I've always liked time travel in children's classics, Book Nerd. But we all have different tastes in books-and that's a good thing!

I did kind of a goofy thing and read #4 first The Grey King. The method to my madness is that it is a Newbery winner and I am within 5 books of finishing my self-imposed challenge to read all the Newberys and really didn't have the time to read the first three first! Grey King was a wonderful book but as someone said previously, they really liked the development of the Merriman character, I would like to read the first three to have a better understanding of The Grey King. Just add them to my TBR! Susan Cooper writes really well!

I read The Grey King this year, too. My kids had the series and I had never read them. I only have the last book left to read but I’m saving it for next year. Merriman is my favorite character so far.

Merriman is the best!
