I haven't read all that many werewolf retellings so I thought this topic might be fun. Let's see what sort of werewolf fairy tale retelling everyone's read about.

Also, Nerdy Werewolf, this topic is for you. Have at it! XD

The Baker and the Wolf by J.M. Stengl is one of my personal favorite novellas. It's a clean, sweet read. There are wolves in this retelling, but I don't want to spoil the fun so I'll put my thoughts about the wolves in this book in spoilers so anyone who wants to read them can. (view spoiler)

Loyal had a bunch of werewolves in it. It is also a Red Riding Hood retelling.

Goodreads won't let me add a book so the first link is to the book and the second is to my review.

I see Goodread's still acting up as usual. Nice to know it's in working order. If something wasn't not working then that means some tired reader hacked the system to get it to work right. 😂

Thank you for those links! I haven't heard of them and look forward to exploring them.

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Here's what I already have:

Scarlet, Cress, Winter and Fairest by Marissa Meyer feature wolf-men from the MOON!

Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright . is based on eastern folk tales and mythology and features a bunch of canine-shifters! Reads like a manga fairy tale.

The Little Werewolf: A Graphic Novel by Stephanie True Peters is a YA/middle grade Little Mermaid retelling...only they're werewolves!!!

I'm sure there are countless Red Riding Hood/Beauty & the Beast werewolf retellings, but I'm only coming up with erotica, and that's not my bag. :)

Ella Ferris (eferris) | 226 comments I think there might be a werewolf or a wolf (not sure, haven't read it yet) in Girl in the Red Hood by Brittany Fichter.

Beasts of Beauty by Celeste Baxendell

She turns into a beast but I don't know if it counts as a werewolf retelling since I have no idea what kind of beast she turns into.

Same. I couldn't find many werewolf retellings that fit the criteria, but I'll definitely let you guys know when I do find one. And looking forward to your updates Nerdy Werewolf!

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Alright! Here are the Beauty & the Beast retellings I've found that feature werewolves!!

For the Wolf by Hannah F. Whitten
Beauty and the Werewolf by Mercedes Lackey
Cry Wolf: A Tale of Beauty and the Beast by Jacque Stevens
Moonlight Beauty by Anna Santos
Beauty and the Beast by Jenni James

I honestly expected to find more...

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Red Riding Hood!

Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright is an adaptation of the movie that came out a while back.
The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter is a short story collection that features "A Company of Wolves" which was also adapted into a movie!
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer (book 2 in the Cinder series) features many wolfmen!
Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce is about werewolf-hunter sisters!
Wolves and Daggers by Melanie Karsak is a steampunk retelling (with werewolves!)
Red Rider by Kate Avery Ellison is a post-apocalyptic retelling with an army of werewolves.
Dust City by Robert Paul Weston is a YA sequel? It follows the Big Bad (were)Wolf's son.
Of Wolves and Wardens by Sylvia Mercedes is an adult high fantasy outing.
Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent where Red is the (were)wolf!!!

I need to read a lot of these. :)

Honestly, Nerdy Werewolf, I feel that way all the time. You would think that Beauty and the Beast would have more werewolf retelling but I always seem to find Red Riding Hood being a werewolf retelling. Ha ha

I think that's because of Disney. Like at this point it would be weird for people to find Beast a wolf because he's supposed to be a deformed monster and not an animal lol.

Thank you for separating them by retelling! That makes the list so much easier to go through. And I need to read a lot of these too so no shame. :)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments No worries! You know I love a breakdown.

And as far as the Beast/werewolf thing, I think you're right about Disney's influence on the mainstream mind's eye. Most retellings I came across actually described him as a kind of bear-man (as if he must resemble something)! Haha!

I thought for sure we'd have plenty of people that thought "a werewolf is a beast," but it's just wishful thinking, I guess!! At least little Red didn't let me down.

I know I still want to do some searches for Big Bad Wolf stories, Boy who Cried Wolf and 3 Little Pigs, etc. Then I'll probably look for the total weirdo stuff where a werewolf is just in there...

Well what is funny about you two saying that is the beast was supposed to be based off of a hairy man. Yes, and this is where everyone spits out their drinks. LOL

The story of Beauty and the Beast became a story to help young girls feel better about getting married to men that were older and so usually hairy.

This is the origin that I have heard but I'm sure their are plenty more.

It is interesting because some people portray the beast as a mean character and other portray him as simple "bear-like" in appearance.

I suppose this has been a fun fact of the day. Ha ha

It's actually quite a sad story about a man with a disease and it's rumored the original Beauty & the Beast tale was inspired by them. Who can say, though, right?

The story of Beauty and the Beas..."

Oh gosh I haven't heard of that before. Although, Disney obviously haven't either with the Beast transforming into a handsome prince in the end lol. I just thought Beauty and the Beast was a tale of a girl wanting to find someone who wants to marry her for herself and not because she's beautiful.

This kind of reminds me of how people say Beauty and the Beast is Stockholm syndrome. Stockholm syndrome isn't even a real psychological diagnosis. It's not an official mental health diagnosis and it's mostly just promoted by the media, but I digress.

Oh wow. That's such a sad story. To be treated as less than human just because of something you're born with. I can't believe they kept him in a cage :O. The very people that were responsible for his genetic diseases because of inbreding treated Petrus Gonsalvus like an animal. I think Petrus Gonsalvus would've been happy if he had his own chateau and left alone like Beast in Disney's version.

Oh my gosh, right?? We latched on to that ages ago and now it's just floating around in our collective conscience....

It's pretty heartbreaking, right? That man definitely could have been happy had he been allowed the agency all people should have access to.

So true. It's become one of those things that once you hear everyone talking about it, it just becomes an accepted fact even though it's groundless. Bandwagoning much.

Definitely. I wonder how his wife felt too. From what the article said, it seems that the two of them respected each other at least if they weren't in love. But the maid was literally dictated who she should marry for the sake of an experiment for the dowager queen's amusement. Of course, Petrus Gonsalvus suffered the most along with their kids who have the genetic condition, but she had her kids sold off to be pets...

I think that The Fire Rose is a werewolf/beauty-and-beast retelling.

I will caution that the book contains references to sexual brutality (by the antagonist/villain, who is not the werewolf), which is why I didn't add it to this group's list sooner.

Ohh I see. Thank you so much for the heads up. You reminded me of a werewolf Beauty and the Beast retelling that I read once called Hunted by Meagan Spooner. It wasn't my favorite, but it does have the elements of a werewolf Beauty and the Beast retelling.
