Hassan | 52 comments The pages of a story book are read to us, revealing that a princess named Fiona has been locked in a tower awaiting rescue from a handsome prince charming. Suddenly, an ogre named Shrek rips out the pages and uses them for toilet paper where a montage ensues. Meanwhile, all of the other nearby fairytale creatures are being captured and shipped away while their captors receive payment. A talking donkey named Donkey luckily escapes into the woods and bumps into Shrek where he tries to befriend him, but instead ends up annoying him and following him home. While Shrek enjoys his swamp themed dinner, he is disturbed by multiple fairytale characters until he realizes that every fairytale creature has literally set up camp around his swamp. He angrily asks why they are here, and they say that someone named lord Farquaad forced them there. Meanwhile lord Farquaad (who is a midget) interrogates The Gingerbread Man until his guards bring him a magic mirror. He asks the magic mirror if he is the fairest king of them all, but the magic mirror says that he is technically not a king unless he marries a princess. After a knockoff of The Dating Game Lord Farquaad chooses princess Fiona. He then organizes a tournament where the victor will have the privilege of rescuing princess Fiona. Meanwhile Shrek and Donkey arrive in the middle of the tournament and demand that Farquaad should relocate the fairytale creatures. Farquaad then announces that whoever can kill Shrek first is the champion. A wrestling sequence ensues where Shrek defeats all of the knights. Farquaad then states that if Shrek can deliver the Princess to him, he will relocate the Fairytale creatures. After a traveling montage, Shrek and Donkey arrive a Fiona's castle, which is surrounded by lava and is guarded by a dragon. Shrek goes to save the princess, but crashes into her tower instead and yanks her through the hallways. Meanwhile Donkey smooth talks the dragon resulting in it wanting to keep him until Shrek takes him and they all escape the castle. A stubborn Fiona becomes angry because she was supposed to be rescued by a prince and not an ogre. Shrek picks her up against her will and heads back to Farquaad. While they walk through a forest, they come across robin hood and his crew who try to kill Shrek. Fiona instead uses Matrix style karate on them leaving Shrek impressed. Fiona demands that they camp overnight where Shrek reveals to donkey that he hates being misjudged for his appearance. After overhearing, Fiona becomes much nicer to Shrek and the two develop a close friendship on the way back. They stop to rest at an old mill were Donkey finds out that during the night Fiona transforms into an Ogre. She explains to him that she was cursed and turns into an ugly beast every night, and only a true loves kiss will turn her into her "true form". Shrek prepares to express his feelings to Fiona but overhears and thinks they are talking about him being and ugly beast. In the morning after Fiona transforms, she prepares to tell Shrek that she likes him, but he brings Farquaad instead because feels hurt by what Fiona said even though it wasn't about him. Shrek, Donkey and Fiona part ways. Farquaad quickly arranges a wedding while Donkey returns to Shrek and explains that Fiona wasn't talking about him. They both ride the dragon and interrupt Farquaad's wedding with Fiona. Fiona then then transforms as the sun goes down shocking everyone. Shrek expresses his feelings Farquaad is appalled and throws a fit declaring himself king while guards restrain Shrek and Fiona. The dragon then bursts through the window and eats Farquaad whole, scaring off the guards. We then transition to Shrek and Fiona's wedding where they are married while Donkey and the fairytale creatures sing through the credits.

I will give this movie 5/5 for originality, plot, and characters. I like the plot the most because its unique and creative unlike most movies today (it's the truth). I also appreciate how it revolutionized animated movies and helped shape modern pop culture.
