Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 2 comments Hope I'm not stepping on toes by starting a thread! If not, totally okay to delete!

I thought it might be fun to introduce ourselves, tell what we are currently reading and maybe something outdoors related -- favorite outdoor activities? Where we read most outdoors? What the 1000 hours outside challenge has taught you?

I'll start --

I'm Jamie -- a 30-something mom to a 4 year old and former winter hater who has been blogging about books since 2010 (and on Instagram since 2012). You can follow me at @perpetualpageturner (my blog is The Perpetual Page-Turner).

I'm currently reading The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna which is an interesting YA fantasy so far. I read pretty eclectically so you will find me reading fantasy followed up by spicy romances to self care to literary fiction. I'll read whatever and am looking forward to recs!

The 1000 Hours Outside challenge has genuinely changed me as a former indoor cat. I am nowhere near as outdoorsy as so many on the group but we got 921 hours last year but mostly I'm glad I learned I don't actually hate winter and honestly kind of enjoy it and I loved how it pushed us outside our comfort zone and how many great memories we made. We mostly can be found outside in our yard or at parks but going to try to expand our horizons this year and maybe try hiking and getting out in ways we don't normally.

Sarah I’m Sarah, married to Jason, mom to Charlotte-5. Born and raised in NJ, now in PA. We lived in SC for the last few years where we gained an appreciation for year-round enjoyment of nature. It was there I joined Hike It Baby and my obsession with my kid being outside strengthened.

By trade, I’m a librarian. I also run a local Forest School, am a leader for the Hike It Baby book group and a volunteer at a nature center.

We have been wanting to complete this challenge but our schedules suck. I’m not really an outdoor reader but I’m a byob (bring your own book) so I’ll read anywhere. I read everything but science fiction and fantasy.

I’m on a YA kick now and am reading Three Things I Know Are True by Betty Culley.

Also in PA! And I'm with you on being a BYOB person. When people laugh about me always having my book AND kindle always in my bag I just tell them about the time I got stuck on the road for FOUR HOURS (instead of my 30 min commute) when a snowstorm was coming and how I finished most of a book in that time as we'd be stopped for forever before we'd inch up on this busy road that was always backed up anyways.

Katie | 1 comments Hi! I’m Katie. Wife to Vic and Mom to 3 girls: almost 8, 6 and 4. I’m an ER nurse at a smaller hospital in Michigan.

This will be our 2nd year doing the challenge. We reached our 1000 hours on thanksgiving day last year…. My goal this year is to finish earlier than that.

I love to read and I kinda bounce around in genres but frequently find myself drawn to the young adult sci-fi or fantasy. Growing up I was a big Harry Potter fan-well I still am. I’m enjoying sharing that love with my oldest daughter currently :)

As a family we love hiking-especially geocaching, camping, art, and travel. My older 2 girls play piano and are Girl Scouts and I’m sure my youngest will follow suit as she gets older.

I love to try new things. And I’m looking forward to book recommendations and trying to get some outdoor reading in!

Jen Kierecki (jenkierecki) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Jen, at-home mom to a 2.5 year old in Western NY where our winters are long and gloomy. This is our first year joining the 1000 Hours challenge and I'm hopeful it will help us avoid the slump we always seem to get in this time of year by getting outside more in all kinds of weather!

I also set a reading goal for the first time since my son was born so this group feels like a perfect combination of my love of reading and my goal to get outside more!

I don't really think of myself as an outdoorsy/adventurous person so 1000 hours feels ambitious but as a family we spend a lot of time in our yard and at local parks walking/hiking and biking so hoping to be more intentional about spending time outside and reading outside!

Tanya Roberts | 3 comments Hi! I am Tanya, Mom to three littles (5,5,2) living in Alberta. I love hiking and camping, gardening and playing in the snow. Books are life, I always have one or two with me and usually have several on the go. I hope to start reading outside more as my kiddos get older, depending on the lure of the garden anyways!

Yay! Where in PA? We grew up on the PA/NJ border. I literally feel lost without a book!

Welcome, Jen. I also don't think of myself as outdoorsy. In fact, I love nothing more than to snuggle on the couch and read. Hoping this challenge helps me get out more.

Welcome, Katie. I love the idea that you and your daughter are sharing reading <3 My daughter is starting to want to read chapter books and I love nothing more than reading with her.

Sarah Shah (saraheshah) | 3 comments Hi all! I'm Sarah- married to Neil (a reader of thrillers/spy novels) and mom to Dilan, turning 5 in February! We live in DC and I'm a middle school English teacher. My fave genres are: historical fiction, YA, and occasional parenting and narrative non-fiction. We didn't make it to 1000 last year but I'm hopeful about this year!

message 12: by Terri (new)

Terri | 4 comments Hi I’m Terri. Mom of 3 boys 22,15 and 10 and married 22 years.

I’m a stay at home, homeschooling, nature, craft and garden lover.

I started the 1000 hours last year but never kept track. I’ll try to keep track this year.

I wouldn’t say I love to read but I do enjoy it. I really love reading great books to my kids and I enjoy self help books, diy and more. I’m kind of all over the place.

I’m excited to be part of both groups and see where this year takes me.

message 13: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne (cschweikert) | 3 comments Hello! I’m Cheyenne. I am a SAHM to 3 kids (17, 9, and 7). We homeschool and love to camp. We camped a total of 60 nights last year, though scheduling changes will mean this year we won’t get to camp as much. We had hit 1000 hours between January 1st and mid-June, but I stopped tracking around 1100 hours in July. We didn’t even count our tent hours.
I love to read all kinds of genres, but particularly historical fiction. I read 137 adult books and 639 children’s picture and chapter books last year. My overall goal this year is 800 books total with at least 100 adult books. My favorite books last year were Verity by Colleen Hoover, The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, and The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. My favorite children’s chapter book for the year was The Power of Poppy Pendle by Natasha Lowe. We do a mix of physical books, Kindle/ebook, and audiobooks.
I’m currently reading Good Company by Cynthia Sweeney on my Kindle and The 2nd Upside Down Magic book on Audible with the kids. I’m usually reading 2 books at a time myself and 2 books with the kids, but I finished The Huntress by Kate Quinn on Libby last night (so good!) and Judy Moody this morning.
I’m excited to be part of a group that mixes our love for the outdoors and books!

Ash Romig (willowprincess) | 2 comments Hey, I'm Ash. I am a stay-at-home parent to my 7 kids that I homeschool. I'm autistic and non-binary, and write and paint on the side (until my kids get a bit older and I can do it full time).
I like to read all the things, so expect to see a good variety of stuff from me.
I have really terrible allergies and am disabled, so I don't get outside as much as I would like, but reading outside on my porch when I can is one of my favorite things to do.

message 15: by Kati (new)

Kati | 1 comments Hey! So fun to see so many homeschoolers, though I guess it’s not surprising when it’s a like minded bunch but still! Anyway homeschooling mom of 2 (8&5) we tried tracking last year but lost track hoping using a chart makes it happen this year though still need to print said chart.. 🤔 obviously not an organized homeschooler more of a fly by the seat of your pants type 🤪

We are in Connecticut and spend a lot of time outside, I’m running a hiking based nature class this year and started up a kids book club so that’s been interesting. We are big animal lovers as well (vegetarian family also) and raise guiding eye dogs though it hasn’t been as fun in pandemic times lol

Love art/photography, we sort of garden in the sense that I feel like I’m constantly weeding and adding plants but still not fully sure what I’m doing 🤣 we’ve been turning our space into a pollinator pathway but have some evil weeds that love to out grow everything 🙃

Currently reading A spark of light by Jodi Picoult and I have been reading exclusively hard copies, I struggle with headaches from a tbi as a result from an accident and screens haven’t been my friend so I’ve been hesitant to go back. It took me 2 years to get back to reading as is 🤦🏼‍♀️ ok well this has turned into a novel of its own lol
