First book of world literature for the year, and with an empty board, there are plenty of choices. I'll put it here, since it applies both literally and emotionally:B5: Book About a Journey
Washington Black by Esi EdugyanCountry: Barbados
While it would be much better to place a book by a Canadian author here, I'll use the spot for this book most people think of when they think of Newfoundland:A3: Set in Canada or by Canadian Author
The Shipping News by Annie ProulxCountry: Canada

I will also read this book within the coming months. A reread for me.
It was a good book for memories of Newfoundland. I may have to go back and reread The Colony of Unrequited Dreams someday, since I read that when I visited the island.
The board is quite open right now, but I'll place this next book here:E5: Set in the Southern Hemisphere
Remembering Babylon by David MaloufCountry: Australia
I have a few options for this book as well, but I'll decide on this spot:A4: Debut Novel
Kintu by Jennifer Nansubuga MakumbiCountry: Uganda
Big open board, but I'll place this one here:D2: Nobel Laureate
Flights by Olga TokarczukCountry: Poland
This one is rather obvious:D4: Translated from Korean
Please Look After Mom by Shin Kyung-sookCountry: South Korea
Much debate, but I'll place this latest read here:B1: Biography or Autobiography
A Game for Swallows: To Die, to Leave, to Return: Expanded Edition by Zeina AbirachedCountry: Lebanon
This was one where I knew in advance where I would place it:E4: Epistolary
The Color Purple by Alice WalkerCountry: United States
A library hold non-renewal pushed this one up in the queue:E1: Nonbinary or Trans Author
The Matter of Wales: Epic Views of a Small Country by Jan MorrisCountry: Wales (United Kingdom)
The last section of this book book focuses on life in a gulag in a river delta, so I'll place it under this category:C5: Rivers, Lakes, or Swamps
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta SepetysCountry: Lithuania
For a short book, this one (and the translated copy I read simultaneously) took a long time to read, thanks to fancy, older Spanish.D3: Between 100-200 Pages
Azul by Rubén DaríoCountry: Nicaragua
This was a long one, as many classics are; nevertheless, it was quite enjoyableB4: 19th Century Classic
The Maias by Eça de QueirósCountry: Portugal
Though I've already read several this year, time to actually record a book from Africa in the most obvious spot on the board:C2: Set in Africa
Paradise by Abdulrazak GurnahCountry: Tanzania
I suppose it's time to get back to adding books to the Bingo board. I'll put one of the best books I've read recently into this spot:C4: Historical Fiction
A Dry White Season by André BrinkCountry: South Africa
And with that, comes Bingo #1:

Time to add another book.E3: Translated Woman Author
The Big Green Tent by Lyudmila UlitskayaCountry: Russia
And now I can knock this one off the board:B3: Classic Horror
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston LerouxCountry: France
This may be stretching it, since the narrator is probably the only one who could be considered the main character, but he is surrounded by several important surrounding characters with disabilities (Margo Benitez, the Jimenez brothers, the Vigil family) who very positively change his life.C1: Main Character with a Disability
Home Reading Service by Fabio MorábitoCountry: Mexico
And I might as well fill in this square now, since it was new to me until 2022:A5: Country Not Read in 2021
Golden Bats and Pink Pigeons by Gerald DurrellCountry: Mauritius
And now to fill in a recent read:B2: Published in Last 3 Years
When I Sing, Mountains Dance by Irene SolàCountry: Spain
And at last, Bingo #2:
