Wolfer a Memoir by Carter Niemeyer. Great read that illustrates a change of heart by one of the pivotal players in the wolf reintroductionhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9...
Has anyone read this recent op-ed by Oliver Sacks on learning he has terminal cancer? It is so touching, so inspiring. He expresses living deeply and richly. He also expresses fear and gratitude. I hope you'll read the entire essay, but here is one quote: "Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege."
Sacks is a celebrated author, but I'd like to vote for The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. Sacks loved this book so much he bought a dozen copies to send to his friends, and the book also more accurately fits the description of nature writing.
From Amazon, "In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her uncommon encounter with a Neohelix albolabris --a common woodland snail.
While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater under standing of her own confined place in the world."
Wild Snail is truly a classic. I'm making plans to use it in class with my special needs students. It's unforgettable.
Thanks everyone. The poll is now up on the homepage and I have stopped taking suggestions for March.
