Bretnie | 838 comments Welcome to the discussion for Ben H Winters's The Last Policeman!

This thread is for general discussion of the book, spoiler free.

I was interested in this book because I'd read Golden State and loved it, and I don't read a lot of mystery.

Who else is joining us for this book, and what drew you to reading it with us?

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I read this a couple of years ago in audio while walking a difficult mountain bike trail. I believe it is the first of a series but I've not looked for any followups. I'll follow the discussion and chime in if it makes sense!

Nadine in California (nadinekc) | 549 comments I finished Last Policeman about a month ago. I loved the two other Ben H Winters books I've read (Underground Airlines and Golden State, and loved this one too. I rarely read series but I'm definitely going to continue with this one.

Jennifer | 122 comments I have read the entire series and really enjoyed it. I actually will read anything by this author.

I look forward to peeking into the discussion

Bretnie | 838 comments For people who have read other of his work, and mysteries in general, I'm curious to hear your thoughts his take on mysteries. I love speculative fiction, so I really enjoyed reading a mystery with the asteroid premise.

Without getting into spoilers (or do, and put it on the full book discussion), how does this compare to a "regular" mystery?

CatBee (ecospirit) | 23 comments For me, the context of the impending asteroid adds a very interesting dimension to the mystery, while preserving the flawed detective persona, who really cares about his victims and wants justice for them. The context gives the author new and different approaches to character development.
