The groundbreaking historical romance:The Golden Crown Literary Society (GCLS) has chosen Patience and Sarah by Alma Routsong (under pen name Isabel Miller) to receive the 2022 Lee Lynch Classic Award.
Patience & Sarah
Patience and Sarah (originally self-published in 1969 as A Place for Us) is a historical romance, seen as the first novel to capture the experience of sapphic women living and thriving in early America. This work was inspired by the lives of painter Mary Ann Wilson and her “female companion” Miss Brundage, who lived in 1800's upstate New York. Set in rural and puritanical New England, Patience and Sarah tells a story of two women who choose to live together and love each other freely. Without precedents to follow they must trust their own instincts to build a life together when opportunities for women were limited and gender was narrowly constructed. Alma Routsong crafted a world where Patience and Sarah could live the life of their choosing, creating a hopeful model for readers and authors everywhere.
