3/5I wanted to love the premise of this one, but I just never got into it.
I could not picture the time jump as he described it, so I would have to stop and figure it out each time which pulled me out of the story--very distracting. I needed the magical/surreal elements to flow better so I could care about the characters. The little brother came across as so mopey that I didn't feel any sympathy for him (or the MC either, really).
This book had a great premis but failed to keep me engaged. It drug and made me want to give up, and believe me, I am not a book abandoner. There are only so many times you can sit waiting for something to happen. The time elements were confusing, but I applaud the ideas promoted of the challenges of the Black population but it got lost with all the other concepts.3/5
