Rowan (rowan_alchemist) As suggested over in the Welcome thread, if you'd like to participate in discussions on particular books: post here with 1 - 3 books for consideration, giving a brief summary of the book and maybe why you'd like to discuss it.

After a few weeks, we'll round up the total list of suggestions, make a poll, and the top 3 will become discussion posts in the coming months.

Before I Let You Go
synopsis: A successful professional woman has her ordered life come undone when her estranged, drug-addicted sister returns, pregnant and seeking help.
I'm a sucker for an emotional story about the strength of family bonds under pressure, and the parts of oneself that are sacrificed in the effort to be there for someone else.

Americanah
synopsis: This book follows the story of a young Nigerian woman, Ifemelu, who immigrates to the United States where she struggles with racism, relationships, and identity.
I like seeing my familiar world through the eyes of different people. Sometimes the most common shared experiences, when bent through the prism of age or gender or citizenship, can be the most thought provoking.

Exhalation
synopsis: 9 science fiction short stories featuring time travel, artificial intelligence, and human beings grappling with an ever-changing world.
Who doesn't like to stare up at the night sky and ask "what if?"

Hour of the Witch
Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is twenty-four-years-old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life. But in a world where every neighbor is watching for signs of the devil, a woman like Mary--a woman who harbors secret desires and finds it difficult to tolerate the brazen hypocrisy of so many men in the colony--soon finds herself the object of suspicion and rumor.

The Night She Disappeared
A cold case, an abandoned mansion, family trauma and dark secrets lie at the heart of Lisa Jewell's remarkable new novel.

The Spanish Love Deception
A wedding. A trip to Spain. The most infuriating man. And three days of pretending. Or in other words, a plan that will never work.
