I GET IT! It's like even though you don't really want a gift you still feel obliged to play with it/read it/use it.

Yep. Hubby bought it for Christmas for me and I like the Mortal Instruments by the same author. This one is set in 1900 England and its soooo. Over dramatic. She couldn't be seen alone with another male for the fear of public opinion. Picnicking in the park seems to frivolous for their parents. UGH. Luckily it JUST started getting interesting-ish. I'm 1/3 of the way through.

Doing the audiobook so I can speed read it. Started a tad late.

I had no idea who she was just 2 months ago. My coworker sold me her entire paperback set for $10 because she was buying a hard cover set.

Best $10 I've spent all year.

Maddy | 90 comments Would recommend The Midnight Library.

:) While it is a little sad in the beginning, it's a really beautiful story.

Maddy | 90 comments Catherine wrote: I love the title!"

It's rather depressing in the beginning. But it rounds out to a really beautiful story. The main character winds up in the midnight library - a realm in the moment between life and death where she gets to try on every possible life/choice she never ended up making for herself.

Every life is a book on the shelf of her childhood library.

I JUST found out it has been on the NY Times best seller list for 51 weeks. I got it as a free book on audible and it was SO worth the time. I just bought a hardcover copy so I can keep it!

message 23: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 90 comments Ps - there are no spoilers in that description. The blurb states as much. And there's so much more depth to the story. <3

I'm reading Shadow and Bone now. I just read Throne of Glass, and right before that, The Giver. After a kind of long reading slump, I'm excited to get through all of my to-reads!

message 38: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 90 comments I'm nearing the end of Storm and Siege - really loving the progression of this story. I stopped to buy King of Scars and Rule of Wolves mid way because I loved the character its based on!

@Catherine good to see that reading slump is history ;) I'm getting excited about reading through the series I have waiting.

Catherine (semi active) | 1505 comments Mod

Yes!! I'm so glad, too. It's good to get back into the reading vibe again:)

Yay for getting through your reading slump!! Are you enjoying your current reads Catherine? Also, how was The Giver? It's one of the books I'm planning to read during this year or the next. Did you like it?

I'm loving the world in Shadow and Bone. So interesting. The characters are interesting, and it actively interests you.

I loved the ideas behind the Giver, and the adventure that the author took you on. The world was also very interesting. The plot wasn't super gripping, and the characters weren't SUPER interesting, but the book made you think.

Hmm I see, but I guess a book that makes you think is still something worth reading! I think I'll definitely give it a try sometime; sad to hear that the plot wasn't gripping, but if the world-building was great, then I'm interested.

Shadow and Bone I've heard about it so many times, it's so popular. By the way, which book got you through your reading slump? Was it this one? Books that can do that must be really fun to read

Oh! I was recommended that book. I was about to ask if you would care to share a review, but then I saw you already posted one! So excited to read it! :P

message 47: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 90 comments It's a different style of book than I've ever read. I liked it very much! It does drag at times - or I should say there's a lot of potentially unnecessary stuff in there - but it's written so beautifully you almost don't even notice :)

I am keen to read Lore! Let us know what you think :)
