Stephanie A-M (steph818) | 20 comments How did you all do for January? Did you get a good start on your reading goals for this year? Are you doing any cool challenges for February/Black History Month?

I am doing #Blackathon2022, #20booksbyblackwomen & following the @BlackGirlBookstaTour .

2 books is great. Is there anything you are super hyped about reading this month?

Yes for 4 books!!! That's great. I am also reading about 90% Black authors for this month. My commute books are nonfiction self help books so those are the only exceptions. What are you excited about reading this month?

Karin | 630 comments I read more books than I planned to in January due to cancellations for many things I was going to be doing plus we all got some sort of non-covid virus (tested neg for covid).

I'm reading South Side Girls: Growing Up in the Great Migration here for BHM right now. It's very different from The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration both in focus and writing style. In the past few years I have realized how lacking my women's studies classes in the 1980s were with the history of black women (I am including more than African-American since I am Canadian first plus I am thinking of Australian aboriginal women) except for Women in Music. To be fair to the profs, my home province is 1 percent black, so when we studied visible minorities it was primarily the women of colour that had a larger population share there.

So I am slowly catching up on this, but am also trying to read more from the main demographic groups in Vancouver which now has a small visible minority majority (and Richmond is only 25 percent white--that's where the Vancouver International Airport is).

Dedra Muhammad | 18 comments At the end of January, I picked up Black Boy again because it feels like home when I read certain books, and Black Boy by Richard Wright is one of my top books. I am still not to page 50 yet because I have been busy (no excuses).
