Long ago, following a cataclysm called “The Rupture,” the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands. Known now as Arks, each has developed in distinct ways; each seems to possess its own unique relationship to time, such that nowadays vastly different worlds exist, together but apart. And over all of the Arks the spirit of an omnipotent ancestor abides.

Ophelia lives on Anima, an ark where objects have souls. Beneath her worn scarf and thick glasses, the young girl hides the ability to read and communicate with the souls of objects, and the power to travel through mirrors. Her peaceful existence on the Ark of Anima is disrupted when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, from the powerful Dragon clan. Ophelia must leave her family and follow her fiancée to the floating capital on the distant Ark of the Pole. Why has she been chosen? Why must she hide her true identity? Though she doesn’t know it yet, she has become a pawn in a deadly plot.

Fragment - that was odd...whose perspective is that?

The Promise - I like the writing so far, the language is more modern that I'd expected somehow. I wonder if it's just due to the translation.

The Promise

I really hope there's an actual reason for Thorn's attitude, and it's not just the way he is.
But I am intrigued to find out more about the world and about the reason behind their arranged marriage. (hide spoiler)]

I just got around to starting it and i like it so far!
I usually have a hard time imagining what authors are describing but not with this book.
I like Ophelias great uncle and the house.

The bear

Tailoring without scissors sounded cool :D It seemed like Thorne wasn't really eager to marry Ophelia either. I didn't like Ophelia's mother and even her sister tried to change her looks. They didn't seem to respect her really much (hide spoiler)]

Wouldn't have expected the grandmother to turn out to be evil! You'd think Thorn could have been clearer in his warning.
I also feel like her conclusion that he's falling in love with her isn't based on much?
So I guess he's the one she shouldn't really trust, based on his reaction (and question about Reading). I supposed it's him, not Berenilde who's hoping to decipher that book.

And it would be great if the ambassador really is going to be more important character in the series. He was interesting, and their group was intriguing. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Agreed, she's awful to Ophelia! In a way, I find that worse than Freya's obvious cruelty. At least she's not acting friendly and caring one moment, only to stab you in the back the next.

(view spoiler)[Really enjoyed it, overall. Loved the different magic clans/families, loved the concept of a fragmented world living on floating arks.
Really curious to see where this is going and how Ophelia & Thorn's relationship will progress.

I think this is definitely a series you have to continue because this only made you familiar with the world & characters but the story realky begins after this introduction (hide spoiler)]
