4. In his introduction, Sarah talks about Judas - to whom is he referring? As best as I recall, this introduction is the first section of the books we've read that was written by Sarah, rather then by his interviewer - How is this different from the rest of the book, if at all?

Jill A. | 920 comments I don't think he identifies Judas with a particular person or group of persons. He identifies Satan as our real enemy, who can make use of whatever sins and weaknesses he finds to destroy and divide us. Such a striking statement, "The Church, full of sinners, is herself without sin." (St. Augustine)

I think Judas in the introduction means:

First, priests who committed acts of abuse against minors.

Second, less visible, more subtle [sins] that nevertheless were just as profound.

Third, the crisis through which the clergy, the Church and the world are going[, which] is a spiritual crisis, a crisis of faith.

It struck me that he was referring also to any Christian who had complaints about the Church, but who was not deep in prayer praying for priests and bishops who have awesome and frightening responsibilities, especially for those who are failing in putting God first.
