TayloR Richardson | 5 comments How do minor characters (Colonel, Doctor Mandelet) impact Leonces views on his relationship with Edna?
How does Edna's kiss with Alcee show her satisfaction (or lack thereof) with her marriage/relationship?

Maria Mesina | 5 comments The minor characters, such as the Colonel and Doctor Mandelet impacts Leonce's views on his relationship with Edna through developing a particular approach towards Edna's behaviors. The Colonel, Edna's father, demonstrates how Leonce should manage his wife. It represents how Leonce should treat Edna with authority, as he advice Leonce, "Authority, coercion are what is needed." The Colonel agrees that the husband should be the one who is in control; however, Docto Mandelet provides a different approach. He thinks that Leonce should leave Edna alone and have patience because she might feel different emotions. Leonce thinks that most women are emotional, but Doctor Mandelet resoinded that not women are all alike. In essence, Colonel and Doctor Mandelet has opposing views about the perspective in the process of their marriage.
Edna's kiss with Alcee shows her satisfaction because she is changing her mindset that Leonce will not control her actions, but rather her emotions control her decision. Therefore, she feels more freedom as she is able to can gain a greater understanding with her individuality, showing that she refused to conform to societal expectations about marriage. As a result, she is following what she wants to accomplish rather than letting other individuals decides her role and responsibility.
