Companion Book to The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

Hello, if you have recently read the Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyn and enjoyed the read as did I, I would recommend you to check out two different children's books. The first book I suggest is the nonfiction text, “My princess boy” by Cheryl Kilodavis. This book is about a young boy who enjoys dressing like a princess. This story teaches young students that it is okay to be different and it is okay to dress and express yourself in many ways. I find this story to be important for teachers to share with little ones because not only does it welcome diversity but it is the perfect example to inform readers to support children regardless of their expression. This story is a “tool” as Cheryl states to talk about “unconditional friendship.” As teachers, it is our job to educate and support ALL students and I find it important to help support and make all of them feel welcome in our community. The other book I would like to introduce to the teaching community is “Say Something!” by Peter H. Reynolds. This is a fiction book that focuses on teaching students to stand up and “Say Something.” I like this book because it shows students that there are many ways to use our voices. This brings me back to The Magic Fish and how Tien used fairytales to communicate with his mom and gain a deep relationship with one another. I think it is important to teach our students that there are many ways to express themselves even when they feel like they do not have a “voice” may it be through pictures, art, plays, expressions, or simply through their writing. As teachers, we should not limit our students to only using their voices to speak up.
