I really enjoyed the writing, setting and characters in this book. The book opens in 1966 with Katey Kontent, the protagonist, seeing an art exhibition. Whilst at the exhibition, Katey sees to photos that bring back memories of her life in the late 1930s. The photos are of a man she knew, and the story then flashes back to 1938, where Katey was working as a secretary in a New York City law firm, living in a boarding house and socialising with a set who go from restaurants to clubs and parties. On New Years Eve in 1937, Katey and her friend Eve meet Tinker Grey at a jazz club. Tinker is rich and befriends the girls, and it is he who introduces them to some interesting characters who come and go throughout Katey’s life as she changes career and moves up the social ladder. The story was well written and descriptive, and created settings that really drew you in. The characters were well-developed, and the minor characters really helped to make New York City in the 1930s come to life.
