What a wonderful continued wild ride in this series set in a modern day Houston where Houses of families with highlevel magic are the power and financial core of the city. This one starts with the murder of 4 lawyers (I tried not to take that too personally) in a hotel suite where they were sent by one of Houston's leading private investigation agencies to handover some importance evidence to someone. Nevada Baylor and her family's PI firm is hired by the widower of one of the lawyers to find out exactly who arranged the kill. Naturally, Connor 'Mad' Rogan also becomes involved as he lost his team of security personnel in the bloodbath. The ongoing chemistry between Nevada and Connor continues to develop as they again try to save Houston from what is revealing itself to be an evil cabal of powerful mages from different houses who want Houston destroyed and all in chaos to allow them to do what they want how they want.

But don't worry, while learning all about those mages skilled in freezing things and others who bond with animals, we take part in a ninja ferret heist and learn more about the unique magical skills of Nevada's siblings. Oh, and we meet their maternal grandmother - and oh is she scary!
