Joni | 626 comments As a concert pianist, Richard is used to being in the spotlight and listening to to applause of people who have paid good money to hear him play classical music. All of that starts to change when he starts to lose use of hands...then his arms. After some doctor's appointments, he learns the said truth that he will no longer play again...he has ALS. He is now a lone in his 4th floor apartment relying on home heath aids to care for him. Until one day his voice activated phone app dials the wrong number, the number of his ex-wife.

Karina has spent the last 3 years after her divorce trying to figure things out. Trying to figure out life. She makes some of her money by teaching kids how to play the piano. Then she gets that one phone call.

As Richard's health begins to decline, he moves in with his ex-wife so that he has more continual care. Emotions are high for both of them until the very end.

What an awful disease ALS is. I just can't imagine. It would be so hard to lose complete use of my body, but have a clear mind. I also cannot imagine taking in my ex-spouse and caring for them. Me, personally, that is not something I could currently do.

I listened to this book and it was wonderfully done. Lisa Genova scripted a wonderful yet heart breaking story.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11294 comments Great review! This is such an interesting and thought provoking book. I loved it too despite the depressing topic. I found the wife's thought processes particularly relevant to something that was on mind at the time I read it. Lisa Genova is wonderful.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments Isn't Lisa Genova a super writer and investigator? All of her books have been researched and she lets us know what it is like to live with some disease. Still Alice was her first big hit and is still worth reading. Thanks for the great review. peace, janz
